Add Ecosia search as default - not extension!!

I want Ecosia Search to be my default search engine. I initially tried with the extension but this redirects searches to Google, which on occasion I still want access too (both its image and its shop search work far better than Ecosia.) So I then added it manually but search engines added by users can not be set as Default!!
According to a thread from 2014 in the Windows forum this is due to security reasons, with the worry that Extensions might redirect to other sites. As the above shows this is utter bull as extensions can still do it by redirecting the other searches like the current Ecosia extensions does! Please fix this! Otherwise I'll have to go back to Firefox despite the fact it's a bloated memory sink!
