I cannot launch or uninstall opera. Please help

I have a strange problem. I'm using Firefox ESR 32bit as my primary browser, and have kept Opera as a secondary browser in case some website refuses to work with firefox. As a consequence of the above arrangement, I hardly ever use Opera- almost every website works just fine in firefox.
Nevertheless, I'd still like to keep Opera installed as an emergency backup.
Now, I just tried opening opera, and it doesn't work anymore. I click on opera, the small circle over the mouse (indicating "working in background") shows up for a few seconds, and that's it- Opera doesn't open, and neither do I get an error message.
Next I thought I'd uninstall Opera, and re-install from the official website, but I can't uninstall Opera either. In Control Panel, I click on "Programs and features", right click on Opera, and click Uninstall, the computer asks for the Admin password, I type in the password, and then the small circle over the mouse (indicating "working in background") shows up for a few seconds, and disappears. No error messages, and no successful uninstall- Opera stays in my Start menu, in "ProgramFiles (x86)\Opera" directory, and in the "Programs and features" list as well.
Any idea how to resolve this strange behavior?
I'm using the 64bit version of Windows 8.1, on a Dell Vostro laptop.
