Cannot close a browser window without closing the entire browser

Basically what it says on the title. When studying for exams, I split my browser into two windows, and when I closed one, it closed the entire browser. I tried this again, still did the same thing. When I tried to merge the tab back into the browser, it closed as well. I'm extremely confused, as there's no extensions I have that could have been causing this. I've been using the same extensions since the beginning, nothing has changed. Help?

How did you close the window? From the menu, using the window controls, the keyboard shortcut (which one), ...?
