how to make new tabs start on same browser session?

Everytime I click on a link, instead of opening a new tab on the same browser window, it creates a new window with the link. Is there a way to stop that and have it open a new tab in the current window?

Right click on the link or use middle click.

There must be tabs extensions out there.
I've got one for Mozilla.
