[Solved]Shortcut to download folder appearing on desktop

  • This folder keeps appearing on my desktop and I keep deleting it and it comes back,I found that it is linked to opera, went into settings looked around and changed the download location so that I don't have this stupid folder on my desktop and its still there...could someone please tell me how to get rid of it thanks in advance

  • The name on your desktop is "Shortcut to download folder" or just "download" or "downloads"?

Does the icon/folder/shortcut reappear as soon as you start Opera or only after you download something?

What version of Opera are you using?

  • In Opera's settings, what is the path to the downloads folder?

  • The name of folder is Downloads but it is a shortcut, in settings downloads path is set to f:/downloads. But if you click on the shortcut folder it doesn't associate with it at all,I am running version 45.0.2552.812 (PGO)....thanks

  • in settings downloads path is set to f:/downloads

Is F a permanent drive? Where is default Windows download folder located?

But if you click on the shortcut folder it doesn't associate with it at all

    It associates to what?

  • Other setting changes are saved?
Try pointing to another folder, test, restart, test, restart and point again to the desired folder.

If doesn't work, you may need to edit the Preferences file into Profile folder with a JSON editor, this can help, just look for Downloads and edit the path, (you can use the notepad but may be is a bit chaotic).

Yeah, I wonder if that's it. If the folder that's specified in the download path setting isn't actually accessible on the system, perhaps Opera defaults to the desktop or does something weird (gets confused) and creates a shortcut to the folder on the desktop instead.

I tested this. Opera defaults to the pictures folder for me and doesn't create any shortcuts on the desktop or even in pictures.

  • changed my default download to library pictures and it still shows up on desktop

  • Do you se any extensions? If so, did you check with them disabled? What about with a clean profile folder?

  • disabled all extensions and deleted download folded shut down opera and restated folder reappears...how do I get a clean profile folder?

  • Rename or delete "C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" and "C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable".

  • Off topic:

Rename or delete "C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" and "C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable".

    ¿?
If ...\Local\Opera Software\Opera Stable is needed also for the cache, then should be added to the FAQ.

You only need to change the cache folder name if you want to create a new cache folder.

  • change the cache folder name and restarted opera folder magically reappears....

  • Meanwhile my other post are being moderated...

Do you have your download list empty?
If not, try clearing it and test again, never knows...

  • @Leocg

You only need to change the cache folder name if you want to create a new cache folder.

So a corrupt cache could mess the test in a clean profile, right?
    If so,

    @Wildch1ld

change the cache folder name and restarted opera folder magically reappears....

Did you renamed both, the profile (\Roaming) and cache (\Local) folders?
    If not try and test.

  • You only need to change the cache folder name if you want to create a new cache folder.

But could any cache problem reproduce again the problem?

    You mean the problem reappears?
You have to rename Profile folder, to use this could be another option.

  • But could any cache problem reproduce again the problem?

I don't think it's related to cache. Anyway, just cleaning it would be enough.

  • been there done that still there...nothing I d/l even goes to that folder,in setting I have checked to ask for download location,I've unchecked it and tried.I guess I'll just pretty up the folder and make it worth looking at lol
