Hello, I'm seeing that there is a tendency to set as default browser Google. I want to ask what is the reason behind to the Opera team.
I cannot understand this hole on the philosophical (privacy concerning) aspect of Opera.
1- Android and IOS have a the Opera VPN feature. Great feature...indeed. Obfuscate the user location. That is nice. Good for downloading torrents in some coutries that blacklist them...
2- Opera MIni has a native block filter. Again very nice... (And I work on this type of business but I think it is great the browser feature this)

What I cannot understand it the default search engine is Google. I don't want to be tracked... And even with the VPN... I'm always tracked when I click at a Google Search result.
So... is that so hard to implement Duck Duck Go as an optional search engine? Or in the more agnostic approach to let the user add the search engine.

Waiting for some insights on this from the Opera Team. Or every other user that feels like to share is opinion here.

      Thanks.

This is an users'forum and although some Opera employees may reply/post here eventually, you should not expect any answers from them.

What I cannot understand it the default search engine is Google

They need to get some revenue from some source so they can keep delivering us a free browser.

I don't want to be tracked

You can simply not login so Google will not know who you are or you can add DDG to your Speed Dial and open it when you want to do a search.

is that so hard to implement Duck Duck Go as an optional search engine?

It would probably depend on an agreement with them.

          Thanks for the comment Leonardo.
This is an issue. Currently this is a forum that is approved and maintained by the Opera Team. Makes sense to have explanation on this from the dev team or the support team.

"This is an users'forum and although some Opera employees may reply/post here eventually, you should not expect any answers from them."
          That is sad...

"They need to get some revenue from some source so they can keep delivering us a free browser."
A free browser? This is strange at least. If Google pay this... this is not a free browser. My privacy goes aways when by default I use Google Search Engine.

"You can simply not login so Google will not know who you are or you can add DDG to your Speed Dial and open it when you want to do a search."

I don't know what information do you have about tracking on the web, but I can assure you that it does not work that way. Of course I can use Speed Dial... but it is awkward not to use the search bar for the purpose of search!

"It would probably depend on an agreement with them."

Yes, maybe it is... that is why a official statement would do great on why we cannot add on Opera Mini another search engine. Take as example Firefox!

First of all we often don't respond, because there is no good reply we can write. It's usually impossible to write when we fix some issue (if ever), what is the reason behind some decisions etc. We are a company and many things must not be disclosed to public.

In general it is possible to add your own search engine, for example on bing.com, just long tap on the input field and there is "Add search engine" option. For some reason it doesn't work on duckduckgo.com, but it's not on purpose. I will check and if it's easy to fix, I will:)

Sorry to say but except maybe for IE/Edge, for obvious reasons, almost all free browsers get some revenue from searches done with pre-installed search engines.

"There is no free lunch", you know.

o4a 41beta v111644 offers a selection of predefined search engines as standard.

@eduardo-rodrigues, you should be able to add DDG as search engine now. Please keep in mind that it will not be set as default - after each restart you need to click icon in the address bar and change to DDG. I am sorry for that.

                    @mbaluta:

...before every search or in a new tab you need to click icon in the address bar and change to DDG.

                    ftfy.

Uh, I wasn't aware it works like that now, I guess it might have been the way I described few versions ago. That's sad:/
