new version - OUT OF MEMORY issue

  • For those facing the 'out of memory' issue:

    What is your OS?

    What is your graphics card?

Any program running in background, like anti-virus, security suite, anti-malware, etc?

    I'm using Opera 42.0.2393.94
    Windows version 8.1 64 bit
    CPU Intel-i5
    16GB Memory
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

If I run Opera with the VPN it uses up memory and crashes. If I run it without the VPN it works fine.

Running Youtube and streaming video causes the memory leak to crash the browser much more quickly.

It is reproducible every time and using the Task Manager you can actually watch the memory usage ramp up till it crashes.

  • Previous author is right.

Main memory leak is located in VPN code, most probably in decryption buffers related code.

As video viewing lead to large transfer amounts you get your leak leading to OOM issue much faster.

Also happens with heavy images loaded sites.

Bug was introduced recently and especially bad became in latest 42 version.

  • I'm using

    • Opera 42.0.2393.94
    • Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)
    • Stable version

and also have the same issue, I frequently use the VPN, too. My computer has

    • 8GB RAM + 2GB Nvidia video card
      My antivirus is
    • Avira Product version 15.0.24.146 06/12/2016.

I also use AdBlock Plus as Opera's adblocker doesn't have a feature to manually block advertisements/content by clicking on them and it usually misses some ads. Adblock Plus is the only extension I use.

It usually happens when I enter a site with a lot of images and video content. The "out of memory" error also happens if there are too many advertisements. I have been having this issue since the v41 release. Sometimes Opera crashes completely and then restarts by itself, too.

  • I'm using - Opera 42.0.2393.94 >Windows 7 Ultimate|AMZ athlon X2| 4 GB RAM| comodo firewall only|
Can not even open more than one tab. There was no problem at 42.0.2393.85 so delete the update and reverted to 42.0.2393.85 again. But today it is happening with 42.0.2393.85 too.
VPN is always on, When I don't use VPN there is not a single incident of "Out of memory";maybe something to do with VPN.

By the way, is there anyway I can download older version of opera from safe place?

  • Does the problem persist if you rename your profile?

  • So everyone facing this 'out of memory' issue was using the VPN when it happened?

  • For my part, i dont use VPN ... still does it

  • For my part, i dont use VPN ... still does it

What about graphics card? Do you use a Nvidia one by chance?

  • i use a GTX 680 card

  • I've posted my specs before in this thread.

I don't use any VPN, no firewall or anti-virus, usually only two things that are constantly running when I'm using Opera are Discord and Logitech software for my headphones.

  • I have windows 10 64 bit operating syst. 4GB ram AMD E2-3800 APU with Radeon HD graphics 1.30 Ghz. I do not use VPN. I have avast antivirus which I have always had and never had problems before the OPera 41 & 42 42.0.2393.94 upgrade. It also happens on my other laptop as well. It doesn't happen with other browsers.

  • Same problem since 42.0.2393.94 update. OUT OF MEMORY errors; reload does not work;

    Windows 10 64-bit (WoW64)
    8gb ram
    GeForce GT 630 graphic card
AMD Athlon II x4 645 processor
    Avira antivirus
    using VPN

I turned off hardware acceleration setting

I use lots of extensions: download chrome, one tab, forever pinned, pocket, disconnect, https everywhere, ublock origin, grammerly

I've used opera as my main desktop browser for over 15 years...

    I use Logitech wireless mouse.

  • In my case, this happens only if VPN is enabled.

  • It is just lot of memory leaks.

With VPN turned on leaks are huge, especially with some large traffic.

With VPN off it also happens, just leaks are much smaller, but also pile up with time.

Before 43 version release development team really need to find most leaks.

  • Windows 10 x64 Home

Intel HD 520 graphics card (laptop)

    Avast anti-virus

    Windows Firewall

    No VPN

The only site i use that this happens with is Twitch.tv. I usually use a popped out HTML5 video. It takes a long time, but after a few hours that video tab goes out of memory. If i have a popped out chat window for the stream, the chat goes out of memory at the same time. The problem has occurred even when video is not popped out (i.e. it's in a regular tab).

  • Happened for first time to me today. 10 tabs open (About low average for me). No videos going. 4 of the tabs received OOM errors apparently simultaneously. Other 6 were fine. The tab I was on was nextwharehouse.com.

OS: Win7 Ultimate latest updates and patches
    CPU: i7-5820k no overclock
GPU: EVGA GTX 660 no overclock
Mem: Crucial Ballistix Sport LT Red 64GB DDR4-2400 no overclock
    MB: ASROCK X99 Extreme4
    Ad Block Plus
    Microsoft Security Essentials
    No VPN at the time
    Memory usage indicated 31%

My system generally idles through everything I do with it and with 64GB of gaming grade memory, not sure how Opera could have detected, let alone produced an OOM condition.

  • 42.0.2393.94 Windows 7 64-bit (WoW64)
    Ghostery
    AVG anti virus

Impossible to open tabs with Opera, except Facebook. The other are running for more than 30 min, without result

But no problem to open the same 10 tabs with Firefox
