I wonder if it happens only when Chrome is running. Isn't Opera built on Chrome, or something like that?
Anyway, I'm experimenting with Chrome shut down while using Opera. I'll try to remember to come back and report on results later.

Nope. Both Opera and Chrome are based on Chromium.

      Interesting point.

No problems, but I remember this: running Google Chrome and RealPlayer even on the same day<<< could crash the system.
No other combinations caused any trouble.

        Also having memory leak issue

Opera 46.0 Stable 64 bit, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, 12 GB RAM, Quad core 3.3 Ghz processor

I came across this Opera Forum thread just now while looking for a solution to my newly developed Opera 46 memory leak. I've been using the Opera browser for a few years now; I was previously a diehard Firefox user until that browser got slower and slower with every new version release. It would seem that the same thing has now happened to Opera and I'm so disappointed. I was simply trying to play Words with Friends on Facebook (a Flash application), and it kept freezing. When I opened my task manager I found that Opera was gobbling up memory non-stop at an increasing pace. As you can see above, I have plenty of memory and a fast processor so this should not be happening in normal use.

I closed the browser, cleaned my cache and re-started it. Everything was fine for a while until it did the exact same thing again, just playing Words With Friends on Facebook. (I tried it with and without AdBlocker + enabled and there was no difference).

Just putting in my 2 cents. I'll patiently wait for a solution, hopefully with an update. Like others who have described their issue on the forum, it seems that the issue occurs when using Flash player so it would seem there is a problem with Opera not playing nice with Adobe or visa-versa.

I got a response from a Mod on Opera Blog about this issue.

Only recently we have been able to reproduce it on one local machine. Problem seems to affect only Windows machines and some user profiles. We still haven't found way to introduce this issue on any of developer machines so we aren't progressing with the fix as fast as we'd like to.

In my experience, this "Out of Memory" error and the crash afterwards, only happens when VPN is active and while a video is being played.

Not quite true. I am having this issue on both Windows and OSX, no video running and no VPN. It does seem to happen quite often with tabs with infinite-scroll websites, like Facebook.

I'm having the same issue with Opera. I have a new (July 2017) Windows 10 system with an i7 processor and 12gb ram. If I leave Opera open with as few as 3 tabs set to articles I'm reading or researching, I'll get Out Of Memory crashes on 2 of the 3 tabs, even if they're all from the same website. It doesn't matter if I have other programs open or not (Thunderbird is usually open). I don't have this problem with Chrome or Firefox. My previous system was Windows 7 with an i5 processor, and I don't recall ever seeing this problem. (both systems 64-bit)

I'm having the same issue with version 47. I love Opera and would rather use it over Chrome and Firefox. I had the same the same issue with version 41 back in December and had to uninstall it. I never had this issue with Opera until version 41.

I would have to agree with dehtop. It can't just be a Windows issue if various users are having the same problem. It only happens with Opera. I've added more virtual memory and decided to give 47 a second chance. The only extension I have is Ublock Origin. I will turn off hardware acceleration and hopefully that will help. If not I'll have no choice but to stop using Opera until the memory leak is fixed. It was fine(nearly perfect) until version 41.

are there any fix for this yet ?
i recognize the problem when you open a web with an infinite scrolling like facebook feed or some site similar to it.
And mostly when you stream videos on youtube.

in short chrome need to refresh itself when the tab is inactive for a while, when opera always keep it active and store the cache on memory that's caused a memory leak.

Is there any fix yet? This started for me too, several months ago. I currently have only 1 tab open for this thread and my task manager reads 46% memory usage. I cleared cache and history, it is still 46%. There are 6 line entries for Opera in task manager. I only have 1 extension (adblock plus). I use Norton Security. Graphics card is Intel(R) HD Graphics 620. Windows 10 Home on this 8GB HP laptop. Anything else I can provide that might help?

Try with How to report problems in Opera steps.

                        For the clean profile:

                        • Opera Help > Find solutions.
And try the workarounds as "Test disabling AV"

                          Running Opera 49.0.2725.47

                          I7 4790k

                          16gb GDDR3

For a while now, I've been having serious problems with unexpected crashes, the "Out of Memory" error, and VPN causing the entire browser to stop functioning. I am almost unable to use Opera at all now because of the "Out of Memory" problem. I have a fine experience on the other browsers I use, but Opera doesn't work anymore. Nothing's changed, I don't know why it's having such a problem now.

Guys, just to let you know, Opera is a 32bit application. This means that it can accede top 4GB of RAM (if the developers have correctly configured it, otherwise it's 2GB). No matter if you have a 64bit OS with 1 trillion GB

??? It's only a 32-bit app if you initially installed it that way. Opera exists in both 32-bit and 64-bit forms. If you first install the 32-bit form and just keep updating it, it will remain 32-bit... but if you have a 64-bit OS, there's no reason you can't clean-install the 64-bit version.

@blackbird71 can't find the 64 version. I can see only one installer here and it install in Program Files (x86) which is for 32bit apps.

Could you suggest a link to the latest 64bit version?

                                      gtx 1070

                                      With 2 tabs (html5 video, this page) : 850mb

The max I've seen was 2.5gb (10 random tabs open)
With normal use is 2gb on avg anyways(3 tabs & 2hours open)

There is possibly a ram exploit but has to be reproduced with certain activities such as: leaving video open in the background, having both messenger and whatsapp in the background

So for 4gb users can be big hard time. Possible fixes? Closing the app and opening it again. Killing messenger and whatsapp. Disable extensions

For developers there should be some kind of ram opmitization, what Firefox quantium does is that only prioritizes the tab that is open at the moment. Reducing a lot of cpu and ram usage

                                      Hope this helps

                                        @ferluis chrome gotta way too..

                                        Automatic tab discarding

Chrome is notorious for its ability to consume memory and even machines with 8GB of RAM might run low with heavy usage. If this is an issue on your PC, you might benefit from automatic tab discarding, which removes tabs from the system memory when it starts running low. Discarded tabs are still shown in-browser and are reloaded when clicked.

This opera flag might help with the video background..

                                        Optimize Background Video Playback.
To optimize chrome performance this flag disables the video track while the video is played in the background.
Enable it, but i have not tried it yet..

Found one flags in regards to tabs in opera..

                                          Pause background tabs

Pause timers in background tabs after 5 minutes on desktop.

                                          and this flag..

                                          Throttle expensive background timers

Enables intervention to limit CPU usage of background timers to 1%

should help memory, cpu, & battery drainage..
