How to REMOVE "Yahoo" search engine after typing "Y" in address bar?

  • Recently as I came back from holiday I noticed that when I type "y" in address bar with intention to go to YouTube aYahoo search engine has been pushing itself in. I tied looking into the google of how to remove it and found one solution that worked at the time.
This solution was to remove the default_partner_content.json from installation root and renaming the siteprefs.json into the default_partner_content and setting it to READ ONLY. This method worked until the last update Opera 41.0, since this update rolled out it is impossible now to do so. <http://superuser.com/questions/956087/opera-31-remove-default-search-engines>

This has been a pain in the ass and I want to remove the yahoo crap out of my search engines for good. Is there any way of doing so?

    Regards,

  • Is there any way of doing so?

    I don't think so.

  • It actually still works. I had to redo it because of the Update, but it does still work.

There are two "default_partner_content.json"s, one at "Opera\41.0.2353.46\resources", the second one at "AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable".

I replaced both, I don't know which one actually did it. Maybe this helps.

    Works.
I assume it is the defaultpartnercontent.json from "Opera\41.0.2353.46\resources" was the one responsible for it.

    Thanks

  • Can I ask a related question here so that not to start yet another thread on this. Sorry, there might be some old threads on that, but it's hard to find due to 1) same crazy amount of threads (and subsequently pages) and 2) crappiness of search here.

In my Opera (36) the default search engine is Google.ru. Can I change it to Google.com at least? I tried but failed to find any options - can it be in some advanced settings? Or do I need to tweak with certain files then?

  • joshl.

Is you browser set to specific language setting like "according to system files" or set in the opera settings anything other than English? If it is, then this may be the problem, as I had this with my Opera, when I had Polish version of Windows 7 and Polish language setting in Opera, it basically send me to google.pl.
If it is, set it to any language you want or according to system (it your system is English).

If it is not the case try doing the defaultpartnercontent.json procedure in the "Opera\41.0.2353.46\resources". It will basically remove every unwanted search engines in Opera and then you will be able to ad your own ones including Google in ".com" or any that you want.

    British English. In the settings.
It was that initially. I might make it clear if I used a multilanguage Setup, also the whole properties of it.
But it seems to me just when installing, the thing used my position/locale/whatever: it loaded speeddials like Yandex.ru, Gismeteo.ru, Rambler.ru, other_stuff.ru, etc.; I deleted some; in search engines, there are Wikipedia and DuckDuckGo that seem like ".com", but the rest is .ru including the default Google.

    Checked it out.
    Yes, multiple languages in settings.
The file was "Opera 36 0 2130 65 Setup.exe". Checked its properties - nothing special; can something like that carry some additional "extra data" affiliate to the source of embedding the download offer or something? The file seems legit, but I'm not certain if the download button/offer was affiliated or embedded on some site, from where it could carry - some stuff?
Here's the file, to be thorough: http://nashobmen.org/fo/get/3406202/689075/Opera_36_0_2130_65_Setup-wap_sasisa_ru.exe (reuploaded).
