I'm using Windows 10 x64 and Opera Beta v39.0.2256.15.

Recently (within the last 2 weeks) noticed that the backspace button no longer works to go back a single page while browsing. I have been using this feature and am quite used to it and do not want to lose this function. I have poured over the forums and help files but I can't seem to find out how to turn it back on. I have found that Ctrl - arrow left/right works for browsing but this is annoying as I am used to it the old way.

Any help on how to turn it back on would be greatly appreciated.

Chromium removed it. You can try to add it again in keyboard shortcut settings.
