I had an persistent problem with Windows 10 and decided to re-install it. That was a BIG mistake!! I lost all of my non-Misery$oft programs, including Opera and ALL of my Speed dial and Bookmarks; of which there were many dozens - some of which are very important to me. 😞

I have tried to recover them from a shadow copy, which shows a large amount of data related to Opera that differs considerably from the re-installed (latest) Opera. None of the variations I tried have worked - Opera crashes and I have to re-install it again. I even found and installed an earlier version of Opera that seemed more related to the data (34.0.2036.50) and copied over the shadow info - no luck.

As the data seems available, how can I restore my Speed dial and Bookmarks? Is there a way to look at the data itself?

      Thanks in advance. 🙂

They are stored inside a file named 'bookmarks' (no extension) in your Opera profile directory. If you can get an undamaged copy of that file you should be golden.

Thanks for your quick reply. 🙂

Yes, I found that file early on and it does export over to the current version, but no icons show. There is also a related file called Bookmarks Extra, along with Favicons - all are fairly large files. I have tried exporting them over from the shadow files and they do not work (no icons or links showing) or they crash Opera. So there must be something else that I haven't found. I've spent many hours on this one issue alone - I'm frustrated, to say the least.

I would think that there must be a away to view those file contents - haven't found such, though.

Which version of Opera were you using originally? Opera 12?

Best that I can tell, it was as I said in my first msg - version 34.0.2036.50. Current version is 35.0.2066.7

Depending on how you do the (re)install, your old data can be found in a folder called "Windows.old".

After you have copied those bookmarks files to the current Opera's profile folder, were you able to see any bookmarks? Regarding Speed Dials, have you checked in Bookmarks > Other Speed Dials?

                  SOLVED !!!

Thank you lando242 and leocg !!!

The copying of items from the windows.old folder solved the problem, but I had to copy quite a few more files than expected. Nonetheless - I am now MUCH HAPPIER and still very much against Misery$soft for their absolute disregard for the every-day computer user who has spent countless hours adding to and refining their own PERSONAL computer to meet their SPECIFIC needs and not those DICTATED by Misery$soft.

I am supremely grateful for the help I received. I owe you both a drink or something.

                  HAPPY - HAPPY.
