All of sudden printing from opera produces a garbled mess with characters overlapping and unreadable. I have no problem with printing form any other program on laptop. Any clues anyone as to what is going on?

Well, at least here, Opera Presto always had problems with printing.

Try disabling "fit to paper width".

Well I disabled fit to paper and played around with other settings. Still the same 😞

Make sure fit-to-width for websites turned off too?

Also, set all the margins to 2.54cm (so they're 1-inch margins).

Also, set "scale to print" 100% (or at least 90%).

Also, uncheck "print headers and footers".

Then, it basically comes down to 2 things:

              • Opera 12 sucks at printing So, it could be just that.

              • The css or print css for the page is messed up.

What type of file are you trying to print. Also, have an example address that we could try?

Thanks burnout. I can't print anything properly, all sites, email, everything. Maybe I should try to do a clean install

Close down Opera and edit operaprefs.ini in the preferences folder (sse help -> about Opera for the location). If that doesn't help, Download the Opera 12.16 installer, launch it, click "options", set the "install path" to the location of your current Opera and click "upgrade". That should fix any program files.

I've never had as big printing problems as reported here, but I've had small problems with Opera printing web pages a bit too small. Usually I had to enlarge the page, 110% or more. Didn't have this issue with IE6, it prints better.

@burnout426, are some versions better? Do you happen to know which Presto Opera version prints the best?

Not really. Maybe Opera 10.10 will print a little better. Opera 8.x might print better in some cases too, but I remember it having to printing crashers and 8.x won't have very good print css support.

Best to just print in IE if you can. It has the best printing (with some cases where Chrome/Firefox print better though).

Yes, IE is better when it comes to printing than almost any other browser.

Sadly my.opera is gone so I link to an archived article I wrote in 2012 how to set up a "print this page in IE" button in Opera, may be it helps:

The Web-archive appends its own URL to the button link in the second sentence of "Part one of the hack: The Button", so the code gets messed up and Web-archive can't locate it for download. Also, to run the button code, you need the VBS code shown in the article to be put into the Windows folder, and you need VisualBasic installed on your system (it's not on Win7, though Windows Scripting Host, which is, might or might not run the code). It might still be possible to get everything to work somehow, but overall, it seems like a rather steep hill to climb.

I fixed this problem by disabling hardware acceleration in opera:config. Not an ideal solution because you obviously want to have it on.

Another potential solution is to use this site: http://pdfmyurl.com/ to save to PDF and then print.

That did seemed to do the trick. I changed hardware acceleration from a 1 to 0 and it is printing fine so far. Obviously acceleration can cause some problems.

                                  Thanks a lot.
