The first Opera beta 33.0.1990.11, the change log, and the announcement 😉

      Vibrancy in OS X

The Opera window looks nicer with its partially transparent frame (enabled by the flag #vibrancy-in-window-frame).

Here is a list of some other flags which were enabled:

      - #proprietary-codecs-support-for-web-audio-api - with this flag we could easily load mp3/mp4 codecs to javascript web audio,

      - #linux-libnotify-toasts - these notifications are used to inform the user about an event, or display some form of information without getting in the user’s way.

      ☕ \m/

My Opera beta 33.0.1990.11 crashes on every youtube video.
I don't have any extensions installed, just the plain browser.
I can open the youtube page but when i open a video i get the "page crashed" message.
It was working fine in the previous version, it happens since the automatic update.

So my opera beta 33.0.1990.11 crashes on all google services: I can't check my mail, can't work and see video on YouTube. So I must to use Google Chrome now. Is it permanent or temporarily?

Everything has been working flawlessly for me 33.0.1990.11

              • Gmail
              • Google Inbox
              • YouTube
              • Udemy
              • SkillSoft (uses Java & Flash...please tell me NPAPI support will remain)
              • My WordPress site that didn't render correctly in Opera 32 does work properly in 33 (why I tried it)

It does all this far faster and more smoothly than all other browsers. (except mouse scrolling gets odd sometimes)

I just installed the beta and it didn't update the release install like I wanted it to, so I had to configure everything. My point being: try CCleaner and reboot to see if the problems persist.

I'd like to put my opinion on the table concerning transparency on os x. I know it's the latest craze and very hip and all, and even apple is overdoing it with their native applications, but there is no reason opera has to jump on the bandwagon. Introducing transparency to the recents drop-down was a nice touch, introducing it to the sidebar was overdoing it, but adding transparency to the frame is too much. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you have to, less is more, especially in design.

I suggest to give os x users at least the option to disable transparency, or just do away with it altogether. Haven't seen anyone complaining that their opera isn't transparent enough 🙂

Hi, I'd like to get the transparent frame in MS windows7. note that win7 starter edition has not aero (transparency is always OFF)

New update - Opera beta 33.0.1990.35, the change log, and the announcement 😉

We’ve got another update for you this week. This time it’s Opera beta, which will be probably the last one before we switch it to Stable.

                              Linux proprietary codecs support

Opera beta is now able to detect whether the chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra package is installed. As long as this package is up-to-date (45.0.2454.x and newer), Opera can make use of the libraries in this package to provide support for some proprietary codecs for media elements, including H264 and MP3.

                              New Opera branding

Please give a warm welcome to our new beta logo:

In this release, we have also a number of bug fixes:

                              - DNA-44054 [Mac] Opera crashes at start with bookmark bar enabled,

                              - DNA-44318 Hidden bookmarks when entering bookmarks manager,

                              - DNA-44494 Enable NPAPI in stable O33,

                              - a few History fixes.

In this build, Chromium is updated to version 46.0.2490.71.

Please let us know if you find any issues and stay tuned because Opera Stable is just around the corner

                              ☕ \m/

Is there a chance to get the chromeos hardware video acceleration paths enabled on linux (maybe via flag?) (VDPAU / VAAPI / libVa)? Patched chromium builds seem to work very well (eg from https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta) and this would be the killer-feature for Opera on linux! 🙂

The Opera 33.0.1990.43 has been promoted to the stable channel 😉

The official announcement: Opera 33 and our contribution to Chromium.

"With Opera 33, we want to look at another vital aspect of bringing the web to as many people as possible – making sure that the browser is performing even on slower networks and older hardware.

Compressing data for smooth internet speed

You probably know that for many years, Opera has had a Turbo mode that speeds up performance on slow networks by compressing data such as images via our servers, so they download faster.

If you haven’t tried it, go to the Opera menu and select the Opera Turbo option. You won’t notice any changes to the layout or interactivity of the page, just smooth, smooth speed.

Reducing Chromium’s memory use for faster hardware performance

But, slow networks aren’t the only bottleneck you face — hardware performance matters, too. The majority of the world’s users aren’t on $1500 high-powered laptops; many people, in businesses, schools, libraries, universities and homes across the world are using older machines with less memory, older processors and slower disk drives.

So, since the release of Opera 15, our first Chromium-based browser, Opera’s engineers have been partnering with our Google counterparts to improve the performance of the rendering engine Blink. We’ve leveraged our expertise from our 15 years making our old Presto engine work well on old machines, and you can read lots of nerdy details on the mechanics of what we’ve done in our developer blog post, Opera’s work to reduce Chromium’s memory use.

Collaborating with other teams for a better web

We’ve also been contributing heavily to other ways of improving the web; for example, Blink/ Chromium’s way of showing multicolumn layouts was written by Morten from our R&D Department. Rune from R&D has done lots of work on improving the performance of styling pages so that they render faster. Sigbjørn has played a central role in the soon-shipping Oilpan project to improve how Blink / Chromium cleans up memory (therefore using it more efficiently). We’re also active in Blink Chromium’s Security and Memory teams.

By collaborating with other companies on our shared code base, implementing our own user interface and features on top of that, and iterating rapidly, we’re keeping you on the fastest, most secure browser we can build, while helping to make the web better for everyone."

                                  ☕ \m/

New, important update, which includes UI and stability fixes - Opera stable 33.0.1990.58, the change log, and the announcement 😉

                                      Highlights:

                                      • DNA-44703 [Mac] Crash in - BrowserWindowController windowDidResize. This is a fix for Mac crash on closing tabs when in the full screen mode,

                                      • DNA-43779 NativeThemeAlt for Win10 - WP8. This one provides a fixup for the Windows 10 native controls, which should now look correctly,

                                      • DNA-44102 [Linux] Some sites (YouTube) no longer offer an appropriate video format (e.g. WebM). This fix enables fallback to other video formats (e.g. WebM) if proprietary video codecs are either not present or not recognized, and there is an alternative video version on the site,

                                      • DNA-45054 White tile on Windows 8.x and up. This is a minor tile icon fixup for Windows 8.1.

Also, the Chromium version was updated to 46.0.2490.80.

New update - Opera stable 33.0.1990.115, the change log, and the announcement 😉

"We applied a few stability and UX fixes in this build, and the highlights for the release include:

                                        * DNA-45200 [Extensions] No permissions messages

This is a fix for extensions installing – now after you’ll install one, the list of permissions should be complete.

                                        * DNA-45037 [Engine] Never save password does not work

This one fixes the “never save password for this site” sliding toolbar selection.

                                        * DNA-45669 Unable to install extension from file

Extensions can now be installed manually.

Chromium is updated to version 46.0.2490.86.
