Opera 12.17 unstable, slow, not responding, closes itself

  • Even clicking the link here to post this thread caused opera to close, and with no error message. So, I have been googling trying to find a fix, only to get more confused. So what would be my best option: a fresh install or try to go back in system to when it was working properly? Or anyone know a likely cause? Thanks

  • I would disable your current profile by renaming the profile folder to profile.old, then start Opera which should create a new blank profile.
If it works OK with that profile, there must be something in the old profile causing the problem rather than any intrinsic problem with the program itself.
If that is the case, the next thing I would try is to restore the original profile (delete the new one and rename your profile folder back to "profile") and then rename the operaprefs.ini file in the profile folder to operaprefs.ini.old and run Opera again.
Again it will create a new default file, and if Opera is then stable it must be something referenced in your original file that's causing the problem.
You then have to go through the tedious process of finding what that actually is of course!

Thanks. If you don't mind where do I find the profile folder with the ini file? And if changing it works do I really need to try to find out what was wrong or just run with the fixed one?

See Help > About for the path to profile folder.

You can always run with the fixed operaprefs.ini file. It merely won't contain any previous customized settings you may have made in Opera, so you'll have to reinsert such Preference changes again manually (if any). If you never made any changes, then you should be good to go as-is with the fixed file.

  • Thanks all. I have not taken any drastic measures yet. It is behaving better now, seems to be related to memory usage, I closed some pinned tabs and keep checking the task manager to see what is happening. Still the occasional not responding but much better than before.

  • Oddly enough, This site is running up memory the most
