I would like a version of Mini that does not have to connect to the Opera servers,so it will still be usable if Opera goes bust or if it doesn't support a version anymore.

Opera Mini does not work without these Opera servers. Thats a technical restriction.

Can't you just release a version that connects directly to the internet instead of through a proxy? Openwave did that.

It seems you don't understand. Opera Mini CANNOT work without Mini servers.
If you're on Android then there is Opera for Android which works in normal mode just like any other browser.

Did you hear about Opera Mobile?

Opera Mini reads only OBML, so HTML&CSS won't parse. It was meant to use pre-processed data from Opera Turbo servers.
However you may want to set up your own Opera Turbo node to save webpages into OBML -

I don't know how to code in Java though. I'm putting that on my agenda after I master HTML and CSS. Would anyone know how to do that? Thanks.
