To get the thumbnail version of the speed dial, in opera 28 also known as the new start page, you have to activate it by a flag setting. Enter without quotes "opera://flags/#experimental-start-page" in opera's address bar. Change "Experimental start page" to "Enable" then shutdown and relaunch opera.

Thanks, i tried it. But nothing actually changed, logos still there, can only REFRESH them.

You can also go to extensions and try the FVD speed dial, works good and lets you change things the way you want it.

Yeah, its cool, but i've got about 1000 dials and i can't transfer them to FVD. The problem still remains.

From 29 on, speed dial is part of bookmarks.

Interesting. So they all look like dials or bookmarks? Also, does synchronization work in latest opera builds?

Ah ok. it is the "Bookmarks backend for Speed Dial" in experimental. Disable it an restart Opera. Then you will get the old preview icons.

Then i will get old useless site logos. "Bookmarks backend for Speed Dial" is disabled by default, so the problem remains. How i can get normal previews like in good old opera?

By upgrading to Opera 29, which has that feature enabled by default.

In current versions of Opera, when you add a bookmark you can select an image (from however many are on the page), a thumbnail or the default text to use as a preview - but note that is bookmark. You'd need to delete any current bookmark for the page, add a new one (and select an image while doing so), then add the page to speed dial. Yes, tedious if you have hundreds of bookmarks you imported from another browser and however many speed dials - but that's what it is currently. (None of us work for Opera, we can only tell you what it is and not change it.)

Nah. You can just go to the page, click the heart icon and change it. You don't need to delete it first.

In Opera 30 I don't see any heart button. I can't find anything to replace the useless writings with a true thumbnail of the page. Where is the heart icon?

                          Still pretty useless though.
Adding to Speed Dial? Then it becomes useless typography....
Adding to Bookmark? Good luck, I did it and the next time I started season all thumbnails became useless typography....
Using Opera 30 btw, Opera 29 didn't had that whole "reset to typography" thing for bookmarks 😞

When you create a bookmark from the heart menu you can pick the thumbnail at the time of creation. So you will also be able to set whether it is a bookmark or a speed dial entry from the heart menu. If you use another method to create a bookmark or speed dial entry, such as the right click menu, you cannot pick the thumbnail. You can edit it later view the heart menu if you wish.
