        There's an easier way.

        1. Go to www.symbaloo.com and create your own set of thumbnails.

        2. Install an Opera extension called 'Custom Home Page' or 'Homepage in New Tab' or 'New Start Page Pro' and copy the address of your Symbaloo mix into the extension.

        3. Start enjoying your new customizable Opera speed dial.

I too would like to be able to set the speed-dial button icons to pictures of my own choosing.

          NOTES:

          • The steps in the 3rd post down (by rafaelluik) no longer work (as of May 19, 2015). The thumbs.db file is still there, but it does not reflect what speed-dials are active. It seems that when I add or change a speed-dial is is only the BOOKMARKS file that gets updated. I'm guessing that as the developers are integrating Speed-Dial with Bookmarks...all data related to the bookmarks & dials is going in to the BOOKMARKS file.

          • The suggestion to use SYMBALOO does not solve the issue. Symbaloo is a third-party site that is not part of Opera. There are many bookmark-managers/speed-dial type sites on the Internet. Using those is okay, if that is what you want. But suggesting that as a solution to this problem is like saying: If your car is broken...don't take it to the mechanic, buy a different car. It's an option, but not a solution to the problem.

          • Saying that we can choose which picture using the Bookmarks / Heart-Menu is not a solution either. It's nice that they put up a couple of pictures for us to choose -- but in many cases I (and many other comments I have read around the web) want the ability to SET OUR OWN picture.

          • I have confidence the developers are working on this as they integrate speed-dial with bookmarks. I like Opera and will wait patiently for this feature.

          Thanks.

The new auto-generated thumbnails make sense most of the time, but sometimes they don't. For example, any forum hosted on a free board, like zetaboards shows something like z11.zetaboards.com. This doesn't have anything to do with what is actually bookmarked.

Setting my own picture should be an alternative.

Ah, the insistence of Opera users on speed dial being integrated into Opera browser. Many browsers use extensions to achieve speed dial functionality so I didn't realise that this may be unacceptable for Opera. Is it because Opera was the first to introduce this feature?

Maybe it's time to move on and stop waiting for the glorious past to come back, this thread has been here for a year without anything happening. Do you really believe that devs are gonna solve this issue quickly if they read posts like "I like Opera and will wait patiently for this feature"?

But you know what, you're right that using Symbaloo is not an option in Opera, but for me it is because it doesn't open as quickly as the integrated Opera speed dial does rather than the fact that it is a third party website. As I've recently discovered it is not the Symbaloo's fault, but it is because Opera is too slow to open it. Maxthon for instance opens up Symbaloo much faster and apart from that it offers an installation of fully customizable speed dial extension, which has nothing to do with Symbaloo. I know, that probably wouldn't be an option for Opera users, would it? 😉

              Sorry for the rant.

Can someone tell me how to reload my thumbnails? Prior to the latest update you could right click and there was an option to reload, now there is only the option to edit or remove.

                  Latest O29 stable.

                  [](http://s149.photobucket.com/user/paor/media/Image 2.jpg.html" target="_blank)
                  Osvježavanje = Reload

But - Gmail and Facebook thumb have disallowed (grayed) this Reload option!?

That's because that icon is set by Opera. And at least I think it's much better than a preview on the page, because it's faster and easier to identify. And just so you know, in the latest stable version the new speed dial is on by default in opera://flags, and the old one will perhaps not be developed more, so I don't think it's time to look after problems with the old one now.

The proposed method was posted about a year ago, I don't know if something has changed structurally speaking, because I opened the .db file and I couldn't see any thumbnails in it. I followed the steps carefully, the only thing different was I had to download a couple of DLL files, MSVCR120 and MSVCP120 to get SqliteBrowser running.

Heh. My Opera 29 doesn't let me reload ANY Speed Dials (in the true latest SD version).

Opera 29.0.1795.60 doesn't allow to Reload images in the Speed Dial - this feature seems to be (temporarily?) dropped/disabled.
Even after enabling #hi-resolution-thumbnails and #hidpi-speed-dial-tiles in opera://flags/ the speed dial images stay pre-defined and static.

This is because the new speed dial page in opera 29 has a totally different backend (they now use the same backend as the bookmarks manager) and an option to refresh doesn't seem to be implemented on the new backend (at least currently)

that feature is hidden behind opera://flags/#experimental-start-page flag
if you disable new speed dial, you will be able to reload thumbnails (old style)

It was removed as the experiment has ended.

yes ended but not the way we wanted it to and still no way to get back to the speed dial we all know and loved for years poor decision from the devs to remove our ability to change it the way we want it

It's supposed to now be available without having to take Programming 101, but it doesn't work.

Hello, using opera 33, still doesn't have this option..

My desktop opera install still has page thumbnails, from when it did that automatically. My laptop was installed more recently, and defaulted to logos. Now opera lets me choose what I want when I add them (perfect), but all the old ones need to be re-added to have what I want? I'd like an option under 'edit' to re-load the thumbnail with whatever I choose (logo, screen-shot, etc.) that it gives me when I add a new one.

                                        Thanks.

Yep, Opera can't know that you want to change old SD tiles and by which picture. You need to change it manually.

Found my own work-around, that's working in V32 (my work install doesn't update automatically, presumably a network issue).

Go the website using the speed-dial link, click the heart and choose a new picture. It will update the speed-dial accordingly. Would still be nice to just right-click and edit, but at least there is a way around without deleting all of them and starting again.
