Opera 29.0.1795.60 doesn't allow to Reload images in the Speed Dial - this feature seems to be (temporarily?) dropped/disabled.
Even after enabling #hi-resolution-thumbnails and #hidpi-speed-dial-tiles in opera://flags/ the speed dial images stay pre-defined and static.

This is because the new speed dial page in opera 29 has a totally different backend (they now use the same backend as the bookmarks manager) and an option to refresh doesn't seem to be implemented on the new backend (at least currently)

          @antonk
that feature is hidden behind opera://flags/#experimental-start-page flag
if you disable new speed dial, you will be able to reload thumbnails (old style)

            Can't find opera://flags/#experimental-start-page
Still I would like to set my speed dial icons to reload periodically as they used to do in the past.

              Can't find opera://flags/#experimental-start-page

It was removed as the experiment has ended.

yes ended but not the way we wanted it to and still no way to get back to the speed dial we all know and loved for years poor decision from the devs to remove our ability to change it the way we want it

It's supposed to now be available without having to take Programming 101, but it doesn't work.

Hello, using opera 33, still doesn't have this option..

My desktop opera install still has page thumbnails, from when it did that automatically. My laptop was installed more recently, and defaulted to logos. Now opera lets me choose what I want when I add them (perfect), but all the old ones need to be re-added to have what I want? I'd like an option under 'edit' to re-load the thumbnail with whatever I choose (logo, screen-shot, etc.) that it gives me when I add a new one.

                    Thanks.

Yep, Opera can't know that you want to change old SD tiles and by which picture. You need to change it manually.

Found my own work-around, that's working in V32 (my work install doesn't update automatically, presumably a network issue).

Go the website using the speed-dial link, click the heart and choose a new picture. It will update the speed-dial accordingly. Would still be nice to just right-click and edit, but at least there is a way around without deleting all of them and starting again.

I've been using Opera for about 2 hours.

After installing a few extensions, the next order of business was to see what's going on with the Speed Dial.

Thank you for sharing the procedure, Monkeyfish8. It wasn't intuitive at all!

Specifically, when you open the speed dial link and click on the heart, you get a half dozen or so pictures you can choose from. After playing with two weather websites, I found one acceptable (usable) picture for each website from the choices I was given. I hope my luck holds out with additional websites, because the choice of pictures that are offered is pretty limited.

With this speed dial, half the time I find myself typing into the Google search field instead of the URL bar. You think the Google field is big enough? Are you sure the placement smack-dab, big-in-the-middle really translates into profits for Google? I mean, it's not like I need their overgrown search field there or else I'll forget they exist.

"If you don't want to use it, you don't have to."

But, if you don't want to use it, it's pretty big, and smack-dab in the middle, which isn't too ergonomic or pleasant for something that you don't even want.

I went into "Manage Search Engines," I added an "Other Search Engine," and I'm still waiting to see where my added choice is going to show up in the GUI. (Sure would have been nice if it had changed that Google field.)

Ugh; this typing field doesn't have a vertical scroll bar, and my mouse-wheel doesn't scroll to the top of what I've written. (Using the arrow-key workaround.) Maybe I'm typing too much.

                          Thanks for tolerating,
                          -n-

I am new to Opera. I use it on Desktop Windows 10. I want to choose what my thumbnail looks like.

I appreciate the generated thumbs as they do most times look very nice. But when they do not I would like to place my own thumbnail in. I can quickly edit a picture in Paint.net so I do not need an editor. Just an option that lets me access a .png with and it's suggested size.

I understand there are probably several workarounds to this thumbnail problem. But non of them are user friendly, quick, simple, or already a part of Opera's options. I would like this option installed by Opera themselves. Currently if I right click a speed dial icon I get the option to (1)edit name, (2)address, or (3)move to trash. I would appreciate a forth option to insert your own thumbnail.

Addons/workarounds are NOT user friendly and quick. I mean the word "speed" in Speed Dial suggests to me a fast solution. Not a forever search for addons or web geek inspired workarounds.

Good browser so far. Thanks for listening to our suggestions.
