Xubuntu Downloads are in HTML not text

I just tried to download my latest statement from by Bank in .ofx format. However, although the file extension is correct the actual file is in HTML rather then text. This also happened when I tried to download an extract from a phpList installation, i.e. html of what looks like the download page rather then .txt of the expected extract.
Running Xubuntu 14, Opera 12.16.

May be Opera 12.16 is not supported anymore by your bank's website or the software redirects to some HTML page.

Thanks fro trying to help. My bank never supported Opera per-se but downloads always worked. This works fine in Firefox, and the same thing happens when I download from a phpList installation that I have.
The HTML looks like the page that the download was coming from rather than the download file.
