I posted this yesterday in another thread. It is possible...

"For me anyway, the Bookmarks feature is counter-intuitive, but after enough trial and error I've gotten what I wanted.

IMO, one should be able to right-click and create a folder from most anywhere in bookmarks, but this is not the case.

First of all, one has to enable the Bookmarks bar from: Opera > Preferences > Browser > User interface > and check the box: "Show the bookmarks bar".

Next right-click on the bookmarks bar to create the newly desired folder, then drag the newly created folder to the 'Bookmarks' folder on the bookmarks bar to make it a subfolder of 'Bookmarks' (the name I happen to use for the one folder I have on my bookmarks bar), then if you want it to be a subfolder of some other folder in bookmarks, drag it again from the drop-down menu of bookmarks to the folder you want it to be a subfolder of. Rinse, lather, repeat.

I don't know, 'drag and drop' is not a feature I'm used to using..."

EDIT: I should have read the OP's entire post first. While it is possible to create subfolders in bookmarks, you have to drill down to them. I don't know of a way to have an expanded view of the folder tree.

The bookmarks tree does appear in the bookmarks bar, looking exactly the same as the view in Opera 12 in fact, including the "add here" option, at least it does in 28 developer.
Not in the bookmarks manager yet though, as has been said.
          🙂

I can't find the same view as in opera 12. The bookmarks bar is above the webpage-window and grants fast access to the most-wanted bookmarks. Not all bookmarks are in there (and that's fine as it is).

Or is it possible to move the bookmark-bar to the side as it was possible in opera 12 (as panel).

The view I found is from he menu button, but if you have 3 ore more sub-folders to sort long-lasting bookmarks this is not intuitive to find..

maybe I use bookmarks in another way as all the other guys outside:

            • keeping some bookmarks sorted into sub-folders for long term
            • keeping quick access in the bookmark bar for every-day-use
            • storing temporary bookmarks in an extra folder (now is better and easy accessible in 'unsorted bookmarks')

The sidebar is gone. Its not coming back. We're lucky to have bookmarks at all. Usage statistics showed that very few users actually use bookmarks. First they tried an alternative to bookmarks called "The Stash". Some people liked it but so many users cried about having 'real bookmarks' that is was dropped and a standard bookmarks system was implemented. That said, very few users of bookmarks even used the sidebar in Opera 12. I know I disliked it and never used it. This is why so few browsers have such a feature by default. Its little used and not work the effort to create and maintain.

In bookmarks manager, there should be an entry in the list on the left called "Bookmarks bar".
If you create a folder there called "Bookmarks" (or whatever) and copy/paste your bookmarks folders into that folder, you can generate a drop-down tree from the "Bookmarks" entry on the bookmarks bar that replicates the Opera 12 bookmarks display.
                🙂

                  What davehawley said. 🙂

In addition, if having a bookmarks bar at the top of the browser annoys you, once created, you can disable it from Opera Preferences, then still access the bookmarks drop-down menu from Opera's menu > Bookmarks > Bookmarks bar > Bookmarks ...

lando ... "Usage statistics showed that very few users actually use bookmarks."

How does a usage statistic know that?

And, "very few users of bookmarks even used the sidebar in Opera 12."

Where are you getting that statistic from?

Just because you didn't like or use it, doesn't mean others agree.

Thats what a usage statistic is.

Where are you getting that statistic from?

When you install Opera you are given the option to let them collect your usage statistics so that they can use those statistics to see what is being used and how much. IIRC it was called the browser improvement program. So, if you opted into that, it was sent to the devs. Back when they first came out with The Stash and in the releases that followed they justified the 'improved' system as being more in line with how most users really used bookmarks. I've sure if you dug around in the release announcements you could fine it.

Just because you didn't like or use it, doesn't mean others agree.

It wasn't just me that they were going off of. As I said they had usage data to work with. I also work as a computer tech and do many services on peoples computers. System cleanings, backups, data recovery, OS installs, etc. I'd say only 1 in 6 of all the computers I service have more than a few bookmarks installed. About a quarter have none at all.

                        Hello!

Besides accessing sub-folders, how do we move bookmarks around? I tried box-selecting (draging a box around several bookmarks) and that does select them, with a checkmark and everything... but that seems useless as I can't find a way of doing anything with it:

                        • I can't move all the selected bookmarks to the folder I want, only the clicked bookmark is moved
                        • I can't delete them (the menu is ghosted)
                        • I can't "Open in new Window", only the clicked one is opened

I don't understand what this "Selection" is for.. and I would like to move my hundreds of bookmarks around to folders instead of one-by-one.

                        Any chance of doing that?
                        Thanks.

What version of Opera are you using? In versions where bookmarks had only recently been added that was an issue but they've improved it since then IIRC.
