From Opera 12.17 to 25, searching for functions

Hello, I am still a user of the good old Opera 12.17 but Opera has more and more problems with the displaying of websites, freezes and shutdowns. So I deciced to take a look at the new Opera 25.
Well, I'm not sure if there still so many functions missing or if I just can't find them. (I think it's number one).

To hold it short, these are functions I miss:

1. Save Browser sessions and open them later again. To find under Tabs and Windows -> Sessions, at the old Opera.

2. Give bookmarks nickname shortcuts. For example o for Opera.com. If you put in o into the address bar Opera.com would be open. The bookmark at Opera 25 is useless for me if you have a lot of bookmarks. I use the same shortcuts for the bookmarks since years, so it's much faster and easier to just write the shortcut in the address bar then scroll and search the whole list of bookmarks everytime with the new Opera.

3. Is there any where an option how tabs should be opened ? For example I've a website opened and want to google search something. So the new tab with the search should open in a new tab in the background.

4. Is there any way to get back the function close tabs while double click on them ?

5. Is it possbile to make the tab bar bigger ? At the old Opera you could pull the tab bar down like you want.

6. At least the function to display the site zoombar a the bottom right of the browser or somewhere else.

So that's it. A lot of things that I still miss before I could use Opera 25 as daily browser. But I don't have much hope that these functions are just hide anywhere.

1. The "new Opera" - however called the same name - is a different browser. Entirely. It's based on a Chrome (or "chromium") engine, and instead of having its own built-in features it HEAVILY relies on extentions (from Google Store*:faint:*).
2. Myself personally being fairly happy with [real] Opera 11, I do not rely upon a single browser, but instead am using several for varying purposes.
   And you can continue using your 12 having the "new" one at hand at the same time*:idea:*

Yep, I know. A few years ago after reading the arguments of Opera to change to chromium, I thought that wasn't a bad idea. But when I now see what Opera has become it was a bad one. I looked at the extentions but there aren't or I didn't found the right extentions to get the missing functions.

Yep, I know. A few years ago after reading the arguments of Opera to change to chromium, I thought that wasn't a bad idea. But when I now see what Opera has become it was a bad one. I looked at the extentions but there aren't or I didn't found the right extentions to get the missing functions.

To the second block.
I could do so. But then there's the question why should I use Opera 25 ? When it's just used for the sites that don't work proper with Opera 12. Then I also can use the with Windows provided IE or Firefox portable, they also don't have the Opera 12 functions. The last one maybe with a lot of addons.
I like Opera and my aim was to totally migrate to Opera 25 in the near future to get away of the problems of Opera 12 and have a browser that gets regulary updates. So I hoped Opera 25 would now have most of the Opera 12 functions. But there's still to much missing for me. Well, at the end I think I've to look at a another alternative like Avant Browser, Maxthon or maybe Firefox with a lot of extentions.

There is a chrome extension, Sessions Buddy, that might be good for you.

To download a chrome extension, you need the Opera extension, "Download Chrome Extension," or "Extension Source Viewer."

In the alternative for saving sessions if you have tabs open, right click on a tab, and then choose save tabs as a speed dial folder and you have your session.

Yes, Session Buddy is good way to get the saving of session option back.
I've used Opera 25 for a few days now, it's ok for normal browsing but to replace Opera 12 there are still to much functions missing for me.

Since the last update from 31.10 I got a big problem with Opera 25. I can't install any extension. Everytime I get an installation error. I've also reinstalled Opera 25 (all folder were deleted) without any difference. Started with admin rights also don't change anything.
It seems the Opera 25 chapter is over again for me, the program more looks like a beta than a program which is for over one year on the market.

I don't if it's a common error, there are a few others with the same error out there but without any solution as I can find.

A way to create something like the old sessions is to right click on an open tab then choose Save Tabs A Speed Dial Folder - this will save all your currently opened tabs in one folder. You can then name the folder

When you want to open the "session" you right click on that folder and click Open All and all the tabs in that folder will open

So, after sometime of using Opera 25 what I can say is, that Opera 25 is running much better (faster, more stable, no website problems so far) than Opera 12. I think it could replace Opera 12 in the near future for me. But one big point is still preventing this. It's the sceond point of my missing function list in my start post.

With nearly fifty bookmarks the bookmark management of Opera 25 isn't really helpful. It's much of scrolling, searching and clicking everytime for every bookmark. The shortcut solution is much faster for me, shortcut in the address bar, enter and finish. I use some shortcuts longer than I use Opera, 2009 did I switch to Opera.

This is still a problem I haven't found a solution for. I tried some bookmark manager of the Opera Store, but I haven't found one with this function so far.

Popup my Bookmarks might be interesting to you. You will need to first install Download Chrome Extension to extensions from the Chrome store.

Oh you sweat summer child. I have one folder that has over 400 bookmarks in it. Even in Opera 12 is was a nightmare to organize. I managed to make the switch to the new Opera because the Dev channel build finally added some basic bookmark options. While its still a far cry from the system Opera 12 had I am able to make use of it.

I recommend you organize your bookmarks using folders. From there, if you have the version of Opera that supports it, you can right click that folder in the O > Bookmarks menu and open its contents all at one go. No way faster to open many bookmarks than that.

There is one kludge you could do though, to get almost exactly what you want. Put each websites address into your search engine list and give it its own shortcut. Just type in the shortcut into the address bar, followed by a space, and hit enter. It will take you directly to that website. Its a wonky way to do what you want, but it does work. I'm sure a real solution will be added someday.

That's not really like the old sessions, that's just a huge kludge. Session Buddy is tons better and may actually be a bit better than the old session manager since it lets you easily edit sessions but it is still only a list of URLs whereas the old session manager actually saved the state of each tab (the most important aspect of this being tab history)

Honestly I don't know why they had to nuke the old user interface just to switch to a new layout engine. The old feature set was much better.

Opera12 works just fine, you just need to add several mime types like application/json to open with opera as application/javascript. Also I've had to hex edit opera.dll to spoof the useragent string of chrome.

It has a long way to go before it's obsolete.
