Opera will not play mp3's and other audio files

Hi guys, I'm having a problem that I can't seem to solve on my own.
Whenever I come across an mp3 or other audio file, whether it's embedded in a page or whether I go directly to the .mp3 file in my browser, Opera will not allow it to play. I click on the "play button" and it immediately turns back to "pause." I have uninstalled and reinstalled Flash and checked that it's enabled in the Plugins window. These files will play in other browsers. I have this problem on my work computer (OSX Mountain Lion) and on my home computer (OSX Mavericks). I have only noticed this problem recently and am not sure how long ago it happened.
Do you have any insight for me? I love Opera but this is a very annoying problem. If it persists I may be forced to switch to another browser although I don't want to.

Example? I would have to see if they actually use Flash or not. If they do not use Flash ... well, Opera will only display video or play audio that is embedded using HTML5 if the video or audio uses an open codec. A lot of Youtube HTML5-based videos will not work as they are encoded using H.264; even if your system has a hardware decoder for it Opera will not play it. So if the audio (or video) did use Flash, you would probably hear it.

So if I read correctly Opera can not play .mp3 files unless the are in an HTML doc? I have this same problem. Using Google Chrome I navigate to the .mp3 I want to listen to (example: www.website.com/music/song.mp3) and Chrome will play it. However Opera displaye the Quicktime logo with a question mark over it. If you can help me I would sure appreciate it!

Firefox and Opera only play (HTML5) .ogg files.
Figured that out when doing a little webpage for class. MP3's play in Safari and Chrome, OGG's play in Opera and Firefox (only in the html5 >audio> tag).

I have the same issue,,, SO CAN another player like VLC be used as a plugin in OPERA and made to respond to audio files clicked on to open in Opera for listening? HAS that ever been done? ALSO I have used ZOOM as a player? It plays anything audio or video! CAN Zoom be a plug in put into OPERA 36 or others? Still using XPSP3? ANY THOUGHTS IDEAS? 2016 Sept!
