[Opera Button] Option to hide/remove

Hi,

it would be nice to have option to remove/hide Opera Menu Button.

In these days when one use many opened tabs, it's just using lot space, but it's usage is really exceptionally by me. And I can even show menu if I need to with standard ALT key. Or even there can be better place for this button/menu link like it is now.

If some kind of branding is an issue, I don't think so. Also from old times I remember, that quite reason of option to hide this button in Presto Opera made many people curios and asking me what kind of browser it is ;).

That's a good idea, stealth789. Why not provide the option to save space here, as others might well like to do that.
But especially thank you on that menu shortcut. The alt key alone pulls up the Opera menu.:) So in regard to everyone's complaining about no menu taking up the horizontal part of the browser, this may ease their concern. At least we ought to be telling people about this easier way to bring up the menu.

Now why doesn't Opera advertise, just the alt key (pressed) brings up the menu. They say "alt f" is the keyboard shortcut in their help guide that they have with the browser. http://help.opera.com/opera/Windows/1471/en/fasterBrowsing.html

The only thing I wonder is whether the alt key alone works with all versions of Opera. I'm using Windows 7. If it works with all versions of Opera, the company Opera needs to amend their keyboard shortcuts and let people know. The alt key alone is a lot easier to remember than "alt.f" for bringing up the menu. It's a perfect toggle.

It was designed that way. In Windows, tapping Alt alone is supposed to activate the menu bar for use of keyboard accelerators - as programs have dropped menu bars it was natural to transfer this to displaying the main menu (whereas the menu button displays the context menu for the current context). So yes, it works in 11-12, I forget which version of Opera/Chromium they got it to work in but it was a while ago. Mind you, that is Windows (and in the case of Presto, Linux) ... that is not how OSX works as they have that menu across the top of the screen and not the button.

I'm used to hide menu in application that works like set it on install, and then use it. So I use how much space as possible, to make it more productive. And then I use menu only once in a while. Sure it depends on application. In any Office Suite, using of Menu / Toolbar is more essential to be shown. Still it doesn't mean there cannot be option for it.
And for sure this is one of low priority things. It's just I can see space for suggestion, I write it. Also I saw other to ask for it.

ALT key is "standard" windows shortcut for Show / Focus of Main Menu. It works in many application, if they stick to the standards and best practice. Still it depends on development platform used and mainly on developer. So you cannot be 100% sure if it works in any program. But in many it is. Also I didn't checked other OS platforms.

ALT + F, is maybe from older Opera Windows versions. In many programs in menu list is standard item "F"ile, with shortcut F. So basically it means open Menu Item Files. Also if menu is shown and you hold ALT key pressed, these possible shortcuts are shown as underlined. Or are simply shown with ALT as toggle. It depends on implementation. But basically it works like ALT + underlined key opens/focus menu item.

+1 for this. As long as I've got Alt or Alt+f, I don't need the button hanging out there and taking up space.

Update: Unfortunately, "plain Alt" isn't implemented well. If you hit Alt+d to focus the address bar while it's already focused, you get the Opera button menu instead. This is incredibly irritating, since the address bar will auto-magically get focus at various times, so you either need to be constantly checking where your focus is, or prepare yourself for the button menu to open itself and block you from typing into the address bar.

Firefox has this correctly implemented, btw. Alt+d always gives you the address bar, and "plain Alt" always gives you the menu.

Hi folks, instead of "Alt+D", you can use other keybindings, to get focus to the address bar: "Ctrl+L", "Ctrl+E", or "F8". Even more, you can rebind it, to get rid of this issue, as follows:
I. Close the Opera, go to the Opera's profile folder (you can find the path in O-Menu>About Opera>Paths>Profile), then open the "Preferences" file in your text editor, and change the first 9 lines as below:

II. Save the changes, close the file, and relaunch the Opera.
Small note: the value for the "AdvancedEnabled", can be "false", if you don't use advanced keybindings - the value of this setting does not affect the "FocusAddressbar" shortcut, because it's a shortcut under the "Basic" section.

Yeah, Opera button is a nasty piece of UI. Why don't give us a small button on the toolbar, like in Chromium or Firefox.
