Importing bookmarks in V.22

Since Opera has been rewritten the bookmarks importer is still under development, this menu entry only works to import from Opera 12 ATM.
Getting bookmarks from these browsers is tricky. It's easier to grab Opera 12, import your bookmarks there, then use the bookmark importer in Opera 22+ to get them from there. Or rely in a third-party, e.g. Xmarks Sync (direct download link for Opera 22+, enable manually in menu Extensions) to sync your bookmarks across browsers (in Opera only the ones in the Bookmarks bar will be shown, to access and manage the bookmarks in the root folder and other folders you'll need and additional extension like Neater Bookmarks direct download).

This is a big problem. I love Opera but releasing a version that is not beta without this function is senseless.

Opera's lack of ability to import existing bookmarks from other browsers strongly discourages me from using Opera. I have hundreds of bookmarks in Safari. Booksmarks Manager - a plug-in to Opera - chokes as a result of trying to import the Safari Bookmarks.

I directly upgraded from Opera 12 to Opera 22 - the bookmarks importer does not work even for Opera 12 bookmarks - the menu option is grayed out. Fortunately, I was able to upgrade to Opera 12, and my Opera bookmarks were still there undisturbed.

@ericnepean So you're back! Hmmmm. You could have searched before posting, you'd have found instructions on how to manually import bookmarks from the terminal when the built-in importer fails to pick up them.

it should not be difficult to do simple task like import bookmarks, or edit bookmarks. This is a core part of a browser and in this regard, Opera 22 is a Fail.

I'm loving Opera. Smoothest and fastest browser I've tried and I've used them all.
It's unfortunate no way to export bookmarks as backup etc but besides that Opera has been amazing.

Hi, I found a way, copy your bookmarks from another browser to HTML file and save anywhere, then drag it in to opera and click on an empty speed-dial, you should find it there, press to open the bookmark speed dial and highlight all the sites, then press the plus near your bookmark tab, a box should pop up then press save, if you need to save another website just click the plus and it should add to your html bookmarks. hope it helps it works for me.

I figured out how to import bookmarks from a Windows version of Opera 12.x to a MAC version of Opera 22.x. Basically I had to figure out how to make what was written for Windows in the following post work on a MAC.
https://forums.opera.com/post/30835
I installed the MAC version of Opera 22 to a "UDISK" USB key in the root folder of that USB key. I installed a Windows 64-bit version of Opera 12 to that same USB key in a folder I named "Opera x64". I copied a nearly current version of bookmarks.adr and speeddial.ini from my Windows version of Opera 12 (located in C:\Users\TheChief\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera x64") to the "\Opera x64\profile" directory on the USB key.
(Note: I had migrated up from Opera 12 several months ago on my Windows 7 laptop, but still had the Opera 12 folder on my hard drive)
The command I ran from MAC's terminal was "/volumes/UDISK/Opera.app/Contents/MacOS/Opera" --presto-small-prefs-dir="/volumes/UDISK/Opera x64/profile"
Note: the slashes are back slash for Windows and forward slash for MAC.

One other thing that I did on both my MAC and Windows versions of Opera 22. I created a folder named "Bookmarks" on the bookmarks bar. After importing all my bookmarks to the bookmarks bar, I dragged them all onto the folder I had just created on the bookmarks bar. Now the bookmarks behave pretty much as they did in Opera 12.
