@im5049 Where is this debug file? I imagine you have to start the opera.exe (or launcher.exe) with a special argument to generate a debug file?

Have you both tried to start Opera using "run as administrator"?

@leocg I believe I did a couple of times just to make sure when this first started, just to make sure there weren't any further "administrative tasks" an upgrade from 21.0.1432.57 to 21.0.1432.67 (an increase of only 00.0.0000.10) might require.

Other than that, running your browser as an administrator seems like an awful idea in normal circumstances. Shouldn't ever need to do that, and it's a bad security practice. Opera shouldn't require users to run their browsers as admin, even only once. Teaches bad security.

Maybe there are rogue registry entries left over from the 21.0.1432.67 version of Opera ?.

asplode: I didn't attache the file. I just copied in the text: "[0516/132722:FATAL:launcher.cc(263)] Failed running Opera.exe"
I've also tried running the exe files as administrator. I've deleted, reinstalled, old version, new version. Absolutely nothing gets Opera to start, despite having used it successfully up until now.

Based on the error message I get when I try the exe file directly (can't execute the path or file; may not have appropriate permissions to access the file), I suspect it may have something to do with access control. I've tried giving full control to the Opera folder to all users ((creator owner" "system" "administrator" "trustedinstaller") but that didn't work.

I also did a complete uninstall and delete of all Opera files (appdata, local, roaming, etc) and then reinstalled, but same problem. I'm at a complete loss.

                @im5049,

Does the Opera browser work in any other account (preferably an administrator account)? If so, then your user account profile may be corrupted. If this is the case then at best, all you'll have to do is create a new user account & reconfigure any application that stored it's preferences & configuration settings in the user account folder (%homepath%).

On the other hand, like suggested above by linuxmint7, perhaps this is the result of a failed update which left some registry entries that is causing the problem. If this is what is happening then there are free uninstaller software that can help remove any leftover unwanted files and registry entries when you uninstall an application. You can even open the registry editor and try to find & remove them on your own by using the 'Find' option and searching for words like 'Opera'.

Another possibility is that the prefetch cache for the Opera application has become corrupted. This is unlikely but does happen on occasion (rarely). To remedy this situation, all you have to do is simply delete any file the contains the word 'Opera' from the prefetch folder located at 'c:/windows/prefetch'(%windir%/prefetch).

Hope you can figure out this problem to help others that may also face it.

Couldn't access prefetch folder, but removed every reference to Opera that I could find in the registry.
                  Same result, same debug message.
My user account shouldn't matter since I had successfully installed and run Opera before this.

What specific version of Opera 21 did you install and re-install ?, And was it from the same .exe ?.

Have you tried downloading it again ?, or maybe even tried a different version of 21.

                    ftp://ftp.opera.com/pub/opera/desktop/

Even if you had successfully installed & used Opera before, that doesn't change the fact that if your user account profile became corrupted, that it wont no longer work properly.

Are you one a 'Standard' account or an 'Administrator' account btw ? I ask because you said that you can't access the 'prefetch' directory, which is a bit strange. You should really try running Opera from another account, there is no harm in trying!

You may also want to run a check on your hard disk drive for errors or bad sectors, just to be on the safe side. You can even try a system restore to a previous restore point before you updated Opera and see if that helps.

I give up. I have an administrator account; I've installed earlier versions. There's nothing more I can think of.
It's frustrating because I was a satisfied user before. Something changed between the last version and this one. It's probably in my computer since I can't even install the old version any more. I get a message saying I can't access the exe files (launcher and opera) but I have no idea how to fix this since I already have an administrator account.
                        Thanks for the suggestions anyhow.

Have you already tried to open Opera and/or the installers using "run as administrator"? I have a few programas here to only run if i do that.

Are you sure nothing undesirable hasn't found it's way onto your machine ?. Could be worth scanning for rogue programs or even malware, that is, if you haven't already done so.

Here's a copy of the debug log:
                                [0517/150240:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe
                                [0517/150248:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe
                                [0517/150320:FATAL:launcher.cc(274)] Failed running Opera.exe

I believe the first numbers are the time. The code 274 looks like the error code.

This kind of crap happens with Google Chrome too. Guess this now happens with Opera due to it being basically the same browser with a skin.

@im5049 Sorry, what I meant to ask was how do you execute Opera to generate the debug file, and where does it put it?

I dunno, I guess it's back to Firefox/Pale Moon for the moment. I really liked the new Opera's speed, since I'm one of those people who leaves a browser open forever between reboots with large numbers of tabs. It handled it quite well, and it has a nicer tab style than Chrome, if an awkward bookmarking system. (Seriously, stop trying to "revolutionize" bookmarks!) I don't like the rounded tab edges to make it look like it's a file folder (thanks for adding them, Australis).

@asplode - I tried just double-clicking both the 'launcher' and 'opera' exe files in the opera folder. The debug file gets created in the opera folder. I also tried a right click and 'run as administrator.' Nothing works.
As I mentioned, I think it is an access problem, although I have no idea why it would happen now and not before. I have an administrator account, and my permissions say I have full control.
                                      Sadly, it's back to Firefox.

@im5049 - So you didn't do anything special to generate a debug output? That seems odd... I thought there had to be a compile-time flag or a command-line argument or something.

I'm tempted to try Opera Next, but whatever tabs I had open/stashed won't make the jump, will they? I wonder if it's as simple as installing Opera Next, then overwriting whatever profile Next creates with the Stable profile folders I already have.

I can't believe I'm considering going to a potentially even less stable browser... sigh.

I submitted this via the bug report form and pointed it at this thread, so maybe some good will come of this. Who knows?
