I exported my opera bookmarks and saved them on my external hdd before I reinstalled windows, but now I have an adr file I cannot import back into opera. What is wrong/what am I doing wrong? More Tools - Bookmark importer is greyed out, I cannot use the option. Is there any other way to import?

I was a little worried that you hadn't gotten a response, and quite a bit of time has passed, so I'll try to help. And hope others join in here, as perhaps I'll miss the boat.

It sounds like you exported your bookmarks from Opera 12 (through its export feature) (and saved it in the external hdd), and now you want to get them back into Opera 12? or Opera 21? I'm thinking Opera 21, because you refer to an importer being greyed out, and Opera 21, under it's menu, More Tools, has what it calls a bookmark "importer." Opera 12 doesn't use that term, but calls its import feature for the bookmarks, "Import Opera bookmarks."

Now bookmarks.adr is the bookmarks file in Opera 12. I was thinking maybe the Opera 21 importer was "greyed out" because there were no bookmarks it could locate in Opera 12, that were ready for importing. To make use of the importer in Opera 21, you need to have bookmarks in Opera 12. So I would think that you should reinstall Opera 12 (and you probably already have), then click on Import Opera bookmarks. Then Opera 12 will try to find the location of the bookmarks, and you can identify the path to the hdd. That should get the bookmarks back in Opera 12. If it doesn't, maybe the file is corrupt??? you could always try manually copying the bookmarks.adr file to the Opera 12 bookmarks file from the hdd into the Opera 12 profile in the computer (after your reinstallation of Windows), and you can then see if the bookmarks show up. You can click on Help and About Opera in Opera 12 to find the location of the profile. It appears to be the last Opera folder in the Opera directory (I don't know why they don't call a profile a profile. :))

If all you were trying to do were to reinstall the bookmarks in Opera 12, that should do it (if the file isn't corrupt). Now if you have the bookmarks in Opera 12, and you want to move them to Opera 21, I'm hoping that at this point the Bookmarks Importer in Opera 21 would no longer be greyed out. First of all though, in Opera 21, I would go to the Opera Menu/Settings (Alt P), make sure "Browser" is highlighted on the left hand side, and under "User Interface," put a check in "Show the Bookmarks Bar." Now go to menu item, "More Tools," and click on Bookmarks Importer (if it's not greyed out). If it is, I'm at a loss.

You need to reinstall Opera 12.x, then copy your bookmarks.adr file back to the 12.x profile folder (usually found in 'AppData / opera / opera'), an existing bookmark.adr file should already exist there, if so, just overwrite it. Then either install Opera 2x (20, 21 etc) or run it if already installed and the 'Bookmarks importer' should now be selectable.

Wish I received these replies a bit earlier lol. I kept googling and didn't think about reinstalling an older version of Opera first, so I resorted to manually copy and pasting each address from the file into another browser and creating new bookmarks. Took me 4 hours but now they're sorted... Thanks anyway, if I ever come back to Opera this info might come in handy.
