Re: "Opera installation not found" message when opening VPN Pro
I'm just curious if the devs could give us a follow up on this issue since it apparently went unnoticed in the post above. But considering the time was taken to create an interactive user-facing dialog with such an explicit message as this - (see screenshot in post above) - then obviously there is someone who would know why the VPN cannot find opera.exe on my system. Here's what I have experienced/done til now:
- I could not get it successfully installed from PC.
- Installed on tablet first. (which did not give me a free trial - nor make it clear I was being charged although I expected the free trial!)
- Waited on devices to sync. And then Opera on PC prompted me to install in order to use the Pro version of VPN.
- Since it was not installed yet, instead of visiting the page I was originally taken to to pay > then download > install - I clicked the VPN button left of address bar and clicked "Launch VPN Pro App" - which initiated the installer on its own. At this point Windows prompts me to "Ok" the install for it to proceed - and Done. I thought that was it.
After making sure it was indeed running since it was not on my task bar nor did anything else pop up, I clicked to see it was running in the System Tray. I right clicked just for the sake of interacting and saw a "Connect" and "Open VPN Pro" and since I assumed I was already connected via browser, I tried opening the VPN itself and was met with the dialog "Opera installation not found...." plus whatever else about trying to reinstall.
I have yet to try that because nothing online (the little I have found suggests that is actually how to fix it. And because I cannot risk the state of the browser itself being compromised at the moment. Notice I said the browser state not the browser profile settings/data/etc. I mean what I am in the middle of.
But I digress.
I decided to get the Pro version specifically because Opera said I do not always need to have Opera running to use the VPN. And I thought that was even confirmed by seeing the VPN has a WindowsService.exe and an Opera.VPNPro.UI.exe And the menu in the system tray for the VPN itself says "Open Opera VPN Pro" but according to everything from Opera's own team that isn't true. It must launch through Opera itself.
I once was a fan of Opera. Even over Vivaldi. But that is false advertising. And If I cannot use the VPN after paying for the Pro version without the browser - then it is not truly device wide (even if it is very thorough how the network connection itself is configured on enabling the VPN service - I do like that.) But it is simply dishonest.
- Obviously, restarted PC, after, also, closing Opera. - At this point, I have added System and User variables for both Opera and the VPN as their own variables and pointing directly to each .exe in both Path and PATH, as well as, copied the VPN installation directory itself along with contents to the Roaming Opera install directory, the directory under the Local path, also, the one for Opera directory under 'Programs' for actual Start Menu program launchers, and to the "Default" subdirectory for Opera too. Oh and I can't forget the Opera VPNPro directory directly below "Opera Software" in the Roaming path directory (which was empty) <<< Is this why it doesn't see Opera? The VPN was installed to my Program Files (x86)...)
So please, it's about time someone answers this question for Opera's loyal and long time users. If not, I will drop you like you're not. and caution others before deciding to use Opera.
It's not like me to post anywhere or use social media but this took me close to an hour. What's up Opera. Or are you a ghost now like the Phantom?
- I could not get it successfully installed from PC.
