Windows 24H2 GX Profiles Not Working
-

I have enabled notifications, I have tried reinstalling the browser, I have tried rebooting the pc. The profiles creation wont make a shortcut, won't send a notification asking to make a shortcut, and the "Restore Icons" won't either.
I'm at a loss at what to do to make these shortcuts show up.
I tried manually making the shortcuts the Chromium way but it just makes new windows in the same profile.
I used to have this issue on my laptop which is running Windows 23H2 but one day it just started working, I honestly don't remember what I did.
Profiles and everything work on my laptop but not my pc. -

Yeah, it was an issue on 23H2 at first, but Opera fixed it. Judging by reports from other users, 24H2 broke it again and Opera needs to fix it again. I'm not running 24H2 yet, so I can't check.

@burnout426 ugh I hope they fix it soon I really need my separate profiles for work, school, and streaming
Do you know if making profiles the chromium way works still? -

Ok so I found a very tedious and painstaking way to make the profiles work on Windows 24H2.
Way 1: Transfer them from my laptop where they work onto my pc.
Way 2: Create new shortcuts yourself.Way 1
- Go to %appdata% on laptop. It should take you to Appdata>Roaming
- Copy the folder "Opera Software" onto a usb drive. Will take forever
- Go to Appdata>Local. Click on "Opera Software" to open it. Copy the folder "Opera GX Stable" onto a USB drive. will take forever
- Go to %appdata% on pc. delete the folder "Opera Software" and import the new "Opera Software" from the USB Drive
- Go to Appdata>Local>Opera Software. Delete the folder "Opera GX Stable" and import the new "Opera GX Stable" from the USB Drive
- Right Click the icon for the Opera Profile on the laptop. Right click the name of the profile, then click Properties. Copy what it says in "Target"
It should look like this:
"C:\Users\quinn\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera GX\opera.exe" --side-profile-name=39363831325F353138373134433333 --side-profile-muted --with-feature:side-profiles --no-default-browser-check --disable-usage-statistics-question - On the pc, copy paste the desktop shortcut for Opera. If you deleted the desktop icon, then Right Click the Opera taskbar icon, Right click the name of the profile, Click Properties, Click Open File Location, Right Click the Opera application, Select Show More Options, and Select "Create Shortcut" and drag to desktop.
- Right Click the desktop shortcut. Click Properties. Paste the "Target" from the laptop shortcut to the pc shortcut "Target". Press Ok.
- Right Click the desktop shortcut. Click "Change Icon.."
- Go to AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera GX Stable_side_profiles. Click on the side profile with the corresponding number.
- Scroll down till you find "Opera on the Side" ICO File. It should be the colored version of the Opera icon.
- Select it then press Ok.
- Drag the icons onto your Taskbar. Do not delete the desktop icons.
- Open the Opera Profile. It should open your profile loading the same stuff from your laptop to your pc.
- Sign into your Opera account to synchronize. note: you need to make an opera account for each gx profile to
WAY 2
- Go to %appdata% It should take you to Appdata>Roaming
- Go to AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera GX Stable_side_profiles
Copy down all the numbers you see. You can click each folder and scroll down to find the Opera GX colored icon called "Opera On The Side" so you know which is which. - Right Click the shortcut for the Opera Profile from your desktop. Press Copy then Ctrl V to paste. If you deleted the desktop icon, then Right Click the Opera taskbar icon, Right click the name of the profile, Click Properties, Click Open File Location, Right Click the Opera application, Select Show More Options, and Select "Create Shortcut" and drag to desktop.
- Right click the name of the profile, then click Properties. Replace the "Target" with this:
"C:\Users\quinn\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera GX\opera.exe" --side-profile-name=39363831325F353138373134433333 --side-profile-muted --with-feature:side-profiles --no-default-browser-check --disable-usage-statistics-question - Replace "C:\Users\quinn" with the location of your own %AppData%
- Replace "39363831325F353138373134433333" with the number of your own GX Profile from step 2.
It should open a brand new profile. Change the theme color to double check.

Yes, that still works. See https://reddit.com/r/operabrowser/wiki/opera/new_profile/#wiki_create_multiple_profiles_for_opera for more info.

Re: Windows 24H2 GX Profiles Not Working
It has been 3 months and this issue still hasn't been fixed, a lot of people use OperaGX because it makes having multiple sets of accounts for different purposes easy. I.e. One for work, another for gaming, perhaps one for streaming/content creation, etc.
Whenever I try to make a new profile it doesn't create an icon, I uninstalled and reinstalled Opera GX multiple times now, even using Revo Uninstaller to make sure it was a full clean uninstall and yet the problem persists. I have tried using the restore icons feature, went through my notification settings and made sure everything was enabled. Restarted my PC and the program but nothing seems to allow me to access the other profiles.
If there was at least a way to change or open a profile in-app then this would go from crippling to someone with multiple sets of accounts to just a minor annoyance but seeing as there's no way to switch opera profiles in-app I'm basically being forced to revert to Chrome or search for another browser that allows for multiple profiles.
I very much enjoy Opera GX and would love to continue using it but until this issue is resolved the browser is essentially unusable for someone managing multiple accounts.
I really hope this gets resolved in an update soon, but in the meantime I'm going to stop using Opera until this fatal flaw is repaired.
(I have attempted other work arounds, even creating custom shortcuts and adding the correct pathing and commands to open a side-profile but none of it has worked.)
My operating system is currently Windows 11 Pro, Version 24H2 and I do not have any special alterations or modifications that might interfere with Opera. This is a normal PC setup for general usage.

@Domina-Acedia Some devs have been investigating this (activity this week) at least. No fix yet. Note though that Opera didn't break it. Microsoft broke it with changes in Windows. Opera has to come up with a new solution to pinning the taskbar icon. Opera is also working on always creating a desktop shortcut even if there are issue pinning the taskbar icon. It has also been realized that being able to open each profile from the profile settings page in the main Opera GX profile would be nice (but no guarantees).
For now, you can try my workaround at https://www.reddit.com/r/OperaGX/comments/1hs841z/comment/m559w27/ to manually create GX profiles on 24H2 to test that it works.
Also, see https://www.reddit.com/r/OperaGX/comments/1hwf5ay/cant_open_my_2nd_profile/ for creating desktop shortcuts for existing GX profiles.

@burnout426 Glad to see they're at least aware and working on a fix. Not surprising to learn that it's an issue with Windows though, after all many of the recent updates have caused all sorts of issues with other programs and applications. Like my Bluetooth on my PC basically doesn't even work anymore due to some of the recent updates - luckily I still got cords so just plugging in my peripherals again.
I'll take a look at the reddit posts later tonight, thank you for the references and information though.

@knilla I've been at this for 2 hours and that second method worked absolutely perfectly, thank you so much!!!
