My Opera desktop icon has changed to a page icon. How do I get the nice bright red icon back?

@fechterin First, delete the bad shortcut.
Then, in File Explorer, browse to "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera", right-click on opera.exe, goto "Send to" and choose "desktop". Then, rename the shortcut on your desktop to "Opera Browser".
To repin the taskbar button, you can right-click on opera.exe and choose "Pin to taskbar".
To repin to the Start Menu icon, you can right-click opera.exe and choose "Pin to start".
Another way to do things is to uninstall Opera (but do not choose to delete your data when uninstalling), delete the install folder at "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera" afterwards, download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", adjust everything how you like and install.

@fechterin To fix an existing desktop shortcut, you can right-click it, goto "properties" and switch to the "Shortcut" tab. Then, in the target field, make sure the command is:
"C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera GX\opera.exe"
and not:
"C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera GX\launcher.exe"
You can also click the "change icon" button and point it to "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Programs\Opera\opera.exe" to get the icon back if necessary.
