Opera Mail is now a separate application and I cannot find a way to tell Windows 8 to use it for all my emailing needs. How do I do this, and do I need to reset my browsers (Opera) separately? Shouldn't there be a simple one click option within Opera Mail itself (rather like the default browser nag perhaps)?

Thanks Leocg, but I'm not sure I feel like messing with the registry to do what surely should be a simple click to carry out procedure that feels nice and safe. I may do though and will let you know if it comes good. I've always promoted Opera, but I think I need this to be easy to set up before pushing it for friends.

Opera Mail is now a separate application

The separate application is just Opera 12.16 with most of the browser parts (and lots of settings) hidden. The separate application is unfinished, buggy and experimental. So, you can continue to use Opera 12.17 just for mail. If you want links in messages to open up in your default browser, goto "Alt + P -> advanced -> programs" and add/set the http and https protocols to open with your default browser.

Shouldn't there be a simple one click option within Opera Mail

In preferences, there's a checkbox. But, it's broken and actually unsets Opera Mail as the default client. You're supposed to use "Default Programs" in windows to set the standalone Opera Mail as the default.

but I'm not sure I feel like messing with the registry

You have to if you want the standalone Opera mail to show up in Default Programs so you can set it as the default client. The Opera Mail installer doesn't set up all the registry keys. On this page, there's a link to a reg file that you can download where you just right-click the file and merge. It'll add the Default Program entries for Opera Mail. The reg keys that are added won't interfere with the ones that Opera Mail adds itself.
