This would be a really useful feature indeed. Somebody has submitted a feature request already, hopefully it is implemented soon:

Apologies for commenting on a post in 2021 but somenot all screen locks will offer you an Media Control option. I am working on a solution myself and the closest is to install VLC Player and use their widget for Media Controls by placing it on your Home Screen. Be very careful for some reason VLC Player likes to buffer as if it's being throttled by a lot just go to YouTube and check the share button as VLC Player and you should be able to play music in the background even when your Smartphone falls asleep. I haven't so far found any other solution besides change your theme on your phone to one that offers media controls on your device. If I some how get VLC Player to stop buffering it's so far the best alternative instead of having to pay for YouTube scam services.

To play YouTube videos in the background on Opera, you can use a simple workaround since YouTube's native background playback feature is limited to premium subscribers on mobile devices only. Here's how you can achieve it:
Install the Opera Extension: Go to the Opera Add-ons website (addons.opera.com) and search for an extension called "Enhancer for YouTube" or "Magic Actions for YouTube." These extensions offer various features, including background playback.
-
Install the Extension: Once you find the desired extension, click on the "Add to Opera" or "Install" button to add it to your browser.
-
Activate Background Playback: After installation, open a new tab, and navigate to YouTube (youtube.com). You should now see additional options or icons related to the extension near the YouTube video player.
-
Enable Background Playback: Look for an icon or setting that allows you to enable background playback. This feature will let the video continue playing even if you switch to another tab or minimize the browser window.
-
Start Playing a Video: Play any YouTube video of your choice. When you minimize the Opera window or switch to another tab, the video should keep playing in the background.
Please note that browser extensions can occasionally undergo changes or updates, so the names or functionalities might vary slightly at the time of your search. However, the general process remains similar for most YouTube-related extensions in Opera. Enjoy listening to your favorite YouTube content in the background while using other applications or browsing the web!

Please add that feature to Opera for Android as per Brave browser. This is the only feature a lot of people using Brave for youtube on Android instead of Opera. Otherwise great browser. Especially navigation bar, ad blocker and speed dial.

I do wish opera had pip ( picture in picture) mode so all of the browsers I've used has it. Why are you even using youtube in opera isnt the app built in on your phone ? Also if you want pip snd background play you could easily download a mod apk off the internet. I know "You will get viruses and malware" I've been using modded youtube for years. Mainly because I dont live in the US or another region where you get pip for free. With the mod I get to watch videos in pip, no ads ! I have had some where it even skips segway ads that the creator makes like sponsors and get background playback.

The reason I use YouTube in Opera because the built in addblocker! So far it does a great job!And as I mentioned up if you set in the options (the three dots at the and of the site address) to open the site as a Desktop site it remains open in the background if you play a video!

Open YouTube in a new tab, click on the three dots at the top right, select "Install YouTube as an app," and then use the app to play videos in the background. Moreover, you can use the extension "Enhancer for YouTube" to achieve background playback.
