Add Brave as a search engine!

@kjemikael I have added it manually and hooked it up to a shortcut. However, what I can't get is the auto-suggest that you get by going to Brave Search directly. Any idea how to do that? If not, I'll try asking in the Brave forums.

@kjemikael I feel exactly the same way. I've added it as a search engine, which is easy enough in Opera, but you Cannot make it the default which is just stupid. Looking around, I can see setting custom search engines as default has been requested from as far back as 2015!
I love opera dearly, but until this is resolved and either Brave added as a search engine or the ability to set custom SE's as default is resolved, I too may have to switch to the Brave browser. Its not something I want to do, but this is a pretty mission critical function.
This is a surprising oversight. You can do it in Vivaldi, for example - though without the auto-suggest feature (or I haven't figured out how to do it).

Unless Opera just wants to be nice, Brave would have to reach a deal with Opera and pay to be a default search engine.

I agree. I love using Opera Browser and recommend it to others. I
loved that Duck-Duck-Go was a choice to use as your default search engine. However, due to their recent change in censorship status, I feel it is only fair to provide Opera users with the choice to use an uncensored, default search engine such as Brave. -

I understand the sentiments of many here wanting Brave Search to be another default search engine choice, But Brave Search is not the panacea it appears to be, in my opinion: see this thread I started in the Brave Community Forum: https://community.brave.com/t/yandex-search-less-censored-than-brave-search-please-say-it-isnt-so/356566

@nomadik Let's not pretend censorship is a civilized tactic. Typically censorship is an oppressive act. It's a hallmark of evil and rarely if ever an artifact of goodwill. Having said that one good way to create intellectually disabled people is to divorce them from having to actually use their own critical thinking and research skills. Censoring and "fact checking" information for people leads to intellectually lazy individuals who have no choice but to accept the narratives and realities presented to them.
We don't want a world like that....

I'd just like the option of setting Any search engine as my default and have it used when I highlight a word and the "Search/Copy" option comes up.

@kendavies91945 FYI Brave Search is now 1.0 as of six days ago. So Opera could add it as a default option.

To be one Opera's default search engine you need to have a deal with Opera - this is very old news, since the death of Opera Presto, 9 years ago.

you can do that with an extension - I use context-search web extension - which I find way more practical since when you highlight a word you get a pop-up with all the search engines you have in the extension.

It's about time to make this happen. There is no reason why we can't assign whatever search engine we want. This is the reason I don't use opera right now. Firefox has plugins for the workspaces that also allow me to remove those tabs from memory, so it's better.
So close.
