How do I install a clean version of new Opera?

I'm trying to install the most current version of Opera, and I've tried this once before. Both times, I've set a new destination folder, but it goes ahead and pulls all my current tabs, bookmarks etc. from my Opera 12.16 installation.

That's expected and by design. Use the USB installation option — that should solve the problem.

All right, thanks. Afraid of sounding like some knobhead, why is it expected? The installer doesn't give you the option to upgrade or do a clean install, or even if it has indeed found a previous Opera version.
Hm, actually the USB installation option tells me I don't have the privileges to install it (although I haven't searched for this error), guess it must be installed on an actual USB disk.

When upgrading your previous versions of Opera, say from 11 to 12, would you not expect your profile to be imported automatically? So why should Opera for Blink be any different? Maybe later, when it has a bookmark import/export feature the installer will offer such options.
You may need permissions to install Opera in program files. A USB install can go anywhere — it doesn't have to be on a USB stick, though the purpose of that would be to use it on any PC. You can put it in My Documents, or create a folder for it wherever you like.
I install Opera to an encrypted virtual drive to protect my data, and make backups easier.

I wouldn't, no, and it would in fact not happen if you created a new folder for an Opera installation.

Out of curiosity, and in preparation before attempting to install the new Opera, what happens if you don't specify a new destination folder, but just accept the defaults? Will the new Opera go in the same folder as the old one?
Will it replace the old Opera?
And if it doesn't replace it, can you later uninstall the old Opera without affecting the new one?
Is it advisable to specify a new destination folder or follow the default suggestions, and what are the merits of each approach? -

Probably. It should use the last install folder.

It depends. If you have Opera Presto (12.16 and older) and will install Opera Blink (15+) then the new install will not replace the old one. Now, if you install Presto over Presto or Blink over Blink then the new install will replace the old one.

If you are installing Opera Blink over Opera Presto i would suggest to change the install path, just to easily separate the files.
