I have a monitor on my laptop and an attached screen for a second monitor. The laptop screen is primary and I have also chosen Extend these displays in the settings. I have discovered that if I start Opera on my primary screen, add a tab, and move the tab to the second screen, and then close the tab on my second screen, then close Opera on my primary screen, the next time I open Opera or restart my computer and then start Opera, it will start on my second screen. I can force it to open on my first screen my moving Opera from my second screen to my first screen, and then close it.

Is there a setting that I can have Opera open on the last screen that I closed it from, or in the alternative always open on my primary screen? It's not a big deal, but I'm not liking the way Opera is behaving when I start it up.

      Thanks for any help.

      Ken H.

So, you're dragging a tab from Opera's window on the primary screen to the second screen which creates a new Opera window on the second screen with just that tab in it. Then, in the Opera window on the second screen, you're closing the only tab there which also closes the window on the second screen so that all you have left is the Opera window on your primary screen. Then, you're closing Opera on the primary screen to exit Opera. Is that correct?

If so, what do other browsers like Chrome and Vivaldi do in this situation when you start them back up?

@burnout426 When I used Chrome (and I just tested it again), it always opens on the screen that was closed last. So, I can open Chrome, add a tab and move it to my second screen. Then I close Chrome on my second screen, then on my first screen, Chrome will open the next time on my first screen. Opera always opens on my second screen if I have done what I did in Chrome. To fix it, I have to move the one Opera instance to my first screen, then close it. It seems to be breaking Windows conventional behavior.

Adding a new wrinkle, when I move the added tab to my second screen it rarely will maximize even if I bring the tab to the top of the screen (which happens quite easily in Chrome). I always have to drag it to the top again, or double click at the top of Opera screen. These two things are driving me crazy, but the rest of Opera is awesome.

@khermonat said in Setting to make Opera start on my primary screen:

Chrome will open the next time on my first screen.

Hmm, perhaps it's just a bug in Opera then. I would expect Chrome's behavior too. I'll see if I can confirm.

Okay, it's a little bit tricky, but I can confirm. I think it's a bug and I filed DNA-99669 for it.

Workaround for now is to goto the URL opera://flags/#new-session-manager, disable the flag, and restart Opera. Just note that the flag might be removed at any time, even if the issue isn't resolved yet.

I filed DNA-99673 for not being to drag a tab to the other display and fling it up to the top to maximize it like Chrome. Opera's UI is a little different that Chrome's, so no guarantee on this one, but hopefully something can be done.

@burnout426 I disabled the new-session-manager flag, and now Opera is behaving properly for me. Thanks!

See https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2022/06/opera-89-0-4443-0-developer-update/. That Opera Developer build is supposed to have a fix for Opera opening up on the wrong display. And, it's supposed to have a fix for dragging to the top of another display to maximize it.

Please make a test standalone installation of that build and test to see if these are fixed.

Just chiming in that this problem still exists, on GX at least. Very annoying.
