Creatng a new window deleted all the tabs in an existing window

I use Windows 10 and let Opera automatically update itself. I've been using Opera for 3-4 yeas, and Firefox for at least 10 years. Plus, I was a computer programmer for many years, and I expect software to behave in particular ways. Apparently, my expectations were not shared by the Opera developers.
I regularly have lots of tabs open on a single window. I clicked the choice to open a new window. I got a new window but I no longer had the first window with its tabs. I had hoped there would be a way to access the first window but no, it was gone. Why would hat happen? I've tried to restore the tabs. I have the browser set up to restore previous windows and tabs. I have tried to reconstruct that first window's tabs but I don't remember every single one. I wish Opera had the feature that Firefox does of being able to restore recently closed tabs and windows. I see no way in Opera to do this. Is there any way to restore all the tabs I had open at one time. This experience tells me that Opera for Windows doesn't understand what "new" means. Any better way to do this than crawling through the history over and over again to try to find all the open windows? Thanks.

I'm afraid that after two weeks I cannot tell you what I did. Opera was running. Now that I want to see what I might have done, I can't find a way to open a new window. I think I clicked the icon that is a square of four squares for a "New Page." I didn't expect that to blitz the window or page that I already had open. Is that what you are suggesting I should have done? Thanks.

The start page icon on the address bar to the left of the address field? If you hold down shift when you left-click it, it'll open a new window. But, it leaves the existing window open.

For now, there are a few things you can do:
Install Session Buddy to keep track of your current session and to save a session for later.
Right-click on a tab and choose "Save all tabs as Speed Dial folder". Then, if you ever have to, right-click the folder and choose "Open all in tabs". You can also goto the URL opera://bookmarks and move the folder out of the start page into "other bookmarks" or the bookmarks bar where you can right-clck the folder and choose to "open all" there too.
You can "Save all tabs as a Speed Dial folder" often and delete the folder to kind of keep a backup of your opened tabs. You can even right-click the folder and name it "Opened Tabs". And, if you open a new tab you want to keep, click the heart icon in the address field when on the page and choose to bookmark it to that speed dial folder.
