Bookmarks suggestions when typing in address bar

@leocg If you've already said it, there is no need to repeat it. I can read. Better than you, apparently.
You can feel free to stop responding as you have been absolutely no help whatsoever and I don't have the time or patience to converse with useless morons. At least @burnout426 offered a couple of suggestions. You've done nothing. I imagine that's par for the course for someone like you who likes the sound of his own voice.
I'll be stopping using your crappy browser and going elsewhere.

Hey! I've been having the same problem recently. I've always had my bookmarks but they never appeared as sugestions on the search bar until like a month ago. It was just annoying at first but now I'm constantly going to some random bookmark by mistake and it's really getting on my nerves. I found myself having to write a full address because the sugestions just don't work. It worked perfectly before and i've been using opera for like 2 years now i think.

@fiambredunicornio So it's not just me! Yep, the same happened to me - Opera just randomly decided one day that it was going to use my bookmarks as the first suggestions when I type something in the address bar. I have no idea why and I don't want it. It's really frustrating. If I want to go to a bookmarked page, that's what bookmarks are for! There's literally no good reason for them to start popping up as suggestions when I start typing.
I don't have any solutions for it either. Since my OP I've reinstalled a clean version of Windows 10 (for a different reason) and reinstalled everything and it STILL happens. The really weird thing is that it still tries to suggest pages that I had bookmarked previously, but have since deleted the bookmark. So I have no idea where it's even pulling some of the suggestions from if the bookmark's been deleted.
No suggestions on this page worked for me and some people were ignorantly unhelpful to the point I suspect they're autistic. This is what Opera is now. I suspect they must have released an update or something along the way as this wouldn't just suddenly happen for no reason when it didn't function like this previously.

There's a new flag
opera://flags/#suggestion-scoring-improved
(see https://forums.opera.com/post/204133), that can cause issues with start page items (which are bookmarks) appearing first/high in suggestions that can cause the wrong URL to load. I forget if it grabs anything from regular bookmarks or not, but you can disable the flag to see if it helps. However, if you've been having the problem for a long time, that flag won't be the cause as it's new.

@burnout426 Helped me, too. Thanks man! I was getting really annoyed at that "feature" because I would usually just type the first couple of letters of a website and it would complete it to the base website (e.g. google.com with only typing "goo"). But it would complete it to some specific site on google, like google.com/some_specific_site_12345 and even if i removed all that in the address bar (so that shows google.com) it would still open the specific website because it was the first suggestion. Really annoying. But disabling that "improved" suggestion scoring solved it for me. Thank you burnout for investing your time to help us normal people!

Let me just say that Opera suddenly started to shove Speed Dial bookmarks into search which didn't happen before. And it is just annoying just because of that fact and also because the way it is implemented. Please let us turn this off.

@burnout426
I disabled that flag and it made no difference whatsoever (tried restarting Opera, and even rebooting my laptop). Opera still starts pulling up my bookmarks as the first suggestions when I start to type anything in the address bar.Again, as an example - if I start to type the word "sound" in the address bar the first couple of things that pop up as suggestions are some Soundgarden guitar tabs that I have bookmarked. Why is it pulling up bookmarks as suggestions at all? Who would even want that as a function? If I've bookmarked something then I already know how to get to that page quickly. That's kind of the point of bookmarking something...
It also still tries to pull up bookmarks that I've deleted as an experiment. Where is it even still pulling that from?? I've tried searching my browser history for the bookmarked page I deleted and it's not in the history, nor is it in the bookmarks (because I deleted it!). So how is it still being brought up as a suggestion? Is anything ever truly deleted from Opera search/bookmark history?
Just such a pain in the ass.

@robor10t said in Why have my bookmarks started appearing as suggestions in the Google search bar auto complete?:

Yeah, I think it's only supposed to control suggestions from Speed Dials on the start page and not all bookmarks. If so, then it wouldn't help in your case.
Why is it pulling up bookmarks as suggestions at all?
Opera does indeed do that. There's no configuration for it either. Chrome does it too. However, Opera does it differently. It puts the bookmark suggestions above some/all the autocomplete suggestions instead of below them.
So, you're probably just experiencing Opera's behavior.
It also still tries to pull up bookmarks that I've deleted as an experiment. Where is it even still pulling that from??
When you delete a bookmark, it just moves it to the bookmark trash. It's not actually gone. I would assume Opera would omit trash bookmarks for suggestions, but just in case it doesn't, goto
opera://bookmarks
and empty the bookmark trash. There are also 3 history files in the profile folder (path as seen at the URLopera://about
) that you could delete while Opera is closed to wipe out all your history just in case something is stuck in the files. -

This "improved-suggestion-scoring" has got to be the most annoying "feature" as of yet. I don't want to go to any of my saved bookmarks this way. They would probably have been in my often visited websites anyway if I would!
It's just highly annoying that I could not just go to youtube using "you" or instagram using "inst" just because one of my bookmarks included "How to install your own ...."
Please, please, do not enable this by default.

Perhaps as the second or third suggestion including bookmarks would be fine. That would make like a "nice to have" addition to search through. Over the years you can accumulate quite a lot of bookmarks you forgot about which may actually be helpful in what you're searching for. But they should never interfere with my default browsing behavior like this.

@burnout426 I appreciate the reply, so thank you first of all.
That being said, nothing you've said has made a difference to my experience. Opera definitely did not start pulling up my bookmarks as search suggestions before I posted in this forum. It happened one day without there being any update that I was notified of (when I turned my laptop on today and opened Opera it notified me of an update that has just been installed and outlined the updated features, so I'm assuming when an update is released a user is notified in some way).
I have no idea why anyone would think adding bookmarks into search suggestions would be a good idea. When a user has bookmarked a page, they already know how to quickly access that page - that's the sole purpose of bookmarks! Adding them to search suggestions (as the first suggestions, especially!) is putting a hat on a hat. It's useless and irritating. There should definitely be a configuration for it. It clutters up almost every search I do as I have a lot of bookmarks, so I can't type anything in the search without pulling up multiple bookmarks before anything else.
I'd already tried emptying the trash from the bookmarks and the deleted bookmark still gets pulled up in suggestions. At this point I think I might have to reinstall Opera to try and get rid of that as I don't know where the errant file is it's pulling the info from and I haven't got the patience to search for it any more than I already have.
Overall, this is a hugely frustrating, disappointing experience as this feature has been forced on me with no option to turn it off. Thanks a lot, Opera.

@Tiemen Thanks, but that doesn't work for me for whatever reason. I'd turned that off before (as @burnout246 had previously suggested it) and it didn't do anything. Tried again now, still nothing.
I did just discover that it had been reset to "default" from "disabled" after last night/yesterday's update though. So if anyone has previously disabled it, it's worth knowing that any update will just turn it back on. That's another feature that's very unwelcome. I don't want any of my personal settings reset to default after an update. I can't think of any other app/program that does that. Maybe I'll bookmark that page, titled "annoying" so I can search for the page to check quicker! LOL
The bookmarks in the search may be useful for some people, but I have a lot of bookmarks (hence why this is so frustrating!) and I know where they are because I took 10 seconds to give them a name when I bookmarked them. All I have to do is sort my bookmarks alphabetically and it's very easy to find anything.
But now, for example, if I type in the word "sound" I get 5 bookmarks pulled up first. This is a feature that should be configurable, not just "tough, this is what happens".
