Opera Browser Assistant?

@mike88 Did you remove all traces of the previous installation of Opera, including the browser assistant?

What file did you use to install Opera?

As I have stated the previous version did not have the assistant.Then from the ftp site I downloaded Opera 67.0.3575.31 setupx64.exe and then I checked in startup and the assistant was there. But It Gets Worse , I then thought I'm going to remove this latest version of Opera which I did through the normal Windows 10 "Add & Remove" menu, guess what, Opera went so did the Assistant (as expected) but it also took away my battery check utility from startup as well ! Since that experience I reverted my drive to an earlier version of Opera, uninstalled that and I have no assistant and my battery check utility is still present in startup. So judge for yourself , everything points to Opera and it may be a long long time before i return to the program if I ever do so.

Okay, just noticed it listed in Task Manager > Startup. Its path relates to Opera developer.

@thegeneral Yes, it seems that the assistant is being installed even on regular installations/upgrades.

Don't know if it is some bug or if it will be the default from now on.

@leocg also autoupdate is showing up in download folder of windows explorer

@leocg I have the startup entry too. It was coming from "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" and was pointing to "C:\Program Files\Opera developer\assistant\browser_assistant.exe", which was present along with "installation_status.json" and "assistant_installer.exe". There was also an extra Opera Developer task in the Windows Task Scheduler that listed "component name=assistant" or something like that.

Weird thing is, in that installation_status.json, it lists "67.0.3575.31" for the version.

I also had tons of Opera Developer updaters in my task manager. And, I had a tons of Opera Installer(SFX) processes.

I also had a separate "opera_autoupdate" folder in the Opera Developer install directory that I hadn't seen before. But, that part was probably due to some of the new update mechanism stuff. Maybe this all is.

"C:\Program Files\Opera Developer\installation_status.json" also had:

"components":{"assistant":"C:\\Program Files\\Opera developer\\assistant"}

in it.

I removed all the stuff manually and will see what the next update does.

There's also opera://flags/#new-component-update-mechanism, which is now enabled by default for Opera Developer. I would think it was just for things on the opera://components page, but maybe since the assistant is considered a component, it gets fetched and installed too now. Not sure though.

@burnout426 I did the following and managed to gte rid of browser assistant:

Removed all Opera and Opera Browser Assisnta related tasks from task scheduler
Uninstalled Opera (developer 68 in my case) keeping my data
Installed Opera developer using the offline installer downloaded from get.opera.com

Let's wait for the next update.

I don't get the tray icon. Windows 10 Home (1909). I had both entries in startup, but never noticed anything running (although windows' own task manager says "medium" startup impact). Figured it was running something really quickly when I logged in. /shrug

I am really, really puzzled as to why only a single opera moderator has commented here and ZERO folks from Opera have attempted an explanation of what this mystery software is doing on our computers. Can we take a tiny break from talking about where we're seeing it and how to remove it and instead focus on what the hell it actually IS?

The above doesn't really make sense (especially in the current context - it now being installed with every instance of the browser). It's not helpful. (although I thank whoever it was who tried contacting someone at Opera to get an answer).

@dragaan Nothing on system tray here too. In fact I only noticed Browser Assistant in task manager and in Oper's installation folder because of the comments in this topic.

@dragaan This is, mainly, a forum for users to help each other. Although people from Opera read the forum and may reply eventually, you hsould not expect any answers from them.

The info I posted at https://forums.opera.com/post/167025 came from an Opera developer. What the Browser Assistant is for still hasn't changed as far as I know. What seems to have changed is that the assistant is present on the system just from installing Opera directly. However, in my case, the assistant wasn't actually running. Maybe Opera is doing some a/b testing. Or, maybe Opera is just testing including it with the installer no matter what and keeping it updated, but only having it activated (and shown in the system tray) when Opera is installed by a 3rd party program. If so, maybe that makes things easier for bundling Opera. Or, maybe it's just due to Opera's recent updates to the updater. Maybe the assistant is just being installed and updated when not actually needed, which could be a bug or maybe intended.

Hopefully we'll find out.
