Emails and RSS feeds disappeared

Hello,

I've been using Opera 12.10 for past several weeks/months without any major problem.
I also have Ubuntu 12.04.
Previously I have been using Opera on my Windows PC for the past 7-8 years. Totally love the browser.

Today, after a normal restart of my PC, I turned back my Opera browser.
But to my surprise all emails and feeds that I have received and still not read (or in case of e-mails read but saved for later usage, often pinned them down) disappeared or became completely "blank".

I do not really care too much about RSS feeds, as I can always check them once again, but the problem is with my emails, as I had plenty of important data and information there, all of which seem to be gone right now.

What happened?
How can I fix it? Is it even possible?

I know this problem. Unfortunately, the only fix I know is reinstall (but it can happen again anytime).

Sadly, we cannot hope for a correction, due the circumstances.

Are you sure anything happened? If Opera thinks another copy is running, it will simply disable the mail client so that you can't have two programs writing the same file at the same time. And in Linux, the way it "knows" another program is running is by the presence of a lockfile.

Close Opera, then inspect both your profile and mail folders to see if there is a lockfile present. If there is, delete it.

Such a shame.. now everything seems to be working just fine, I mean I'm able to receive and send new emails, but cannot access the old ones. Luckily most of them is present on my email accounts' servers, so I can access them, but digging through hundreds of mails will be problematic...

For sure there was no other Opera copy running. As I said, I just casually restarted the system and then BAM, no old emails for me.

What do you mean by "lockfile" ? The file that is named like this somewhere in one of Opera's folders?

I have exactly the same problem as reported above. When I started my MAC some days ago, my old mails have disappeared and I cannot access the inbox from two account I use with pop3 via Operamail. The small little window in the left bottom says 'download mail and a number' but nothing more is happening. I receive emails from two imap-accounts, but as well, no old mail. It seems that I am not the only one?
What except reinstallation can I do?

That is not the same thing, you really should not be stealing another person's thread for your problem. If the forum software permitted it I'd split your reply into its own thread so as to avoid distraction from the original issue ... but as it doesn't I'm just going to have to recommend you start your own topic in an appropriate forum.

As it happened with me some times when I was searching for some problems and found some messages on forums with similar problems, without any solution:

For future readers - I have not found any solution to the problem.
My emails just disappeared, I cannot retrieve them. All passwords, feeds and email account seem to be working without any problems right now.
Just some kind of error, bug or incompatibility.

Too bad Opera has so many of these. And I am saying that as a fan of Opera.

What happened?

Sounds like the database became corrupted for some reason. Perhaps it's been corrupted for a while and it just recently got really bad.

How can I fix it?

In opera:config, under the "Mail" section, set "Mail Database Consistency Check Time" to 0, save and shut down Opera. When Opera asks, run a database check. Opera will then shut down, scan the database and try to fix some things if it can. The results will be logged to recovery.log in "/home/user/.opera/mail".

If that doesn't fix it (and it likely won't), rename the mail folder while Opera is closed. Then, start Opera up and set up your mail accounts again. Then, goto "Menu -> settings -> import and export -> import mail -> import generic mbox -> add folder" and browser to "/home/user/.opera/mail/store/accountN" where N is the number for the account as seen in accounts.ini. In the import dialog, choose what account pop account to import into. Repeat the steps for each of your POP accounts.

After the importing is all done, if you have duplicates of messages (an imported copy and a copy fetched from the server when you set up the pop account), delete the imported copies.

You'll have to readd your labels etc., but it'll get your messages back.

There's no way to restores you feed messages (as feed messages. You can import them as mail messages though) that way. But, you can export your feed list before you close down Opera and rename the mail folder and import it into the new mail folder. You'll have to readjust each feed's update interval though.

Now, if the messages in question were removed from the server and from the accountN folder, then they're gone.

Also note that for IMAP accounts, you just set them up again. You don't import at all to restore them.

On another note, if Opera just isn't seeing new messages on the server anymore, you can have Opera redownload all messages in the inbox for the pop account (and fix the problem at the same time) by deleting the uidl file for the account in the pop3 folder in the mail folder.

Also, if you have the exact same setup on windows, you can just copy the mail folder and contacts.adr and use them to replace the ones on Ubuntu. Then, it'll be an instant fix.
