Can you PLEASE stop changing the taskbar icon color? It appears that taskbar icon is supposed to change to red when a download fails. However, that is not working properly. It seems that 100% of the time when the download opens a dialog box for the user to specify the location or the file name of the file to be downloaded that the taskbar icon will change to red at the end of the download. Why do this? Other bowsers don't try to do this and Opera has not been able to get this right EVER, at least not since I started using it a few years ago. I love everything else about Opera, but this is REALLY annoying. If you can't get it right why keep doing it?
BTW, now I'm on version 58.0.3135.107.

It works fine for me, I only see the task bar icon turning red when there is a problematic download.

If it works for everyone else and I'm the only one having the problem then I think I may know what is the most likely cause of my issue. I use and ID with Administrator privileges on my PC, but for extra security I have an ID that has regular access with no Administrator privileges. When I run Opera and most other applications that access the Internet I setup a shortcut that does a "runas /user:UserIDWitoutAdminRights \FullPath\Opera\Opera\launcher.exe". This way I run the Internet application with lower privileges. Perhaps this is why my icon turns red. I used to use the same process with FireFox (before they ticked me off and I switched Opera) and still use with IE and they didn't/don't have any issue, but maybe Opera is different? I also have Opera set to "Ask where to save each file before downloading" because I file different files in different places. After I provide the file name/location and download status bar reaches the end the taskbar icon turns red every single time without any exception.

I just confirmed and that is indeed the issue. I went to yahoo images and clicked on a file and did a save as and saved the image to my PC. The icon turned red. I then ran Opera as my regular admin ID and saved the same exact file and no red Icon. I tried it three times with the same result. I will continue to use my lower privileged ID process as that should be safer, but I really hope Opera can find a solution for this issue as I find it extremely annoying. I don't want to go back to Firefox. In case that's not clear, please note that all the files save just fine as the ID that is not administrator.

Even though you're using "ask" for downloading, in settings, what happens if you set your download folder path to somewhere like "C:\Users\UserIDWithoutAdminRights\Downloads" instead of "C:\Users\UserWithAdminRights\Downloads"?

Or, give "UserIDWithoutAdminRights" read/write access to "C:\Users\UserWithAdminRights\Downloads" (and perhaps "C:\Users\UserWithAdminRights\AppData\Local\temp"), as a test.

Another thing you can try (as a test) is to launch opera.exe in the latest version folder instead of launcher.exe just to see if something with runas gets lost when launcher.exe launches opera.exe.

Thank you for your help burnout426. As an FYI the download folder for the none-admin ID is set to that ID's download directory at "C:\Users%username%\Downloads," but I have also enabled "Ask where to save each file before downloading." So I always get prompted for the file location. I never save anything in "C:\Users%username%\Downloads" directory, Instead I have a data partition with multiple directories so I can back up my data easily. The none-admin ID has read/write access to the paths that contain none-sensitive data and it is able to save files to those locations just fine.
I tried your suggestion of running the latest version of opera.exe instead of the launcher.exe and the behavior is exactly the same.

Is there any difference if you set the download path setting to a folder on that partition? I know you're using "ask", but there might still be some issue with the red icon trigger code where it checks the download path setting and fails in your case. The download directory might still be used for "ask" the first time.

When you use "runas /user:UserIDWitoutAdminRights \FullPath\Opera\Opera\launcher.exe", when Opera launches, goto the URL opera://about and take note of the "profile" path. Does it correctly show "C:\Users\UserIDWithoutAdminRights\Appdata\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable"?

Thank you very much burnout426 for your help. I finally got things working properly. I followed all your suggestions, but I was still having the same problem. I Finally decided to remove the settings for the none-admin ID so I renamed the "C:\Users%username%\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" out of the way. Once I launched Opera everything worked the way it should. I thought I might need to do this but hesitated to do it because I have so many settings that I need to update afterwards. One of the big ones for me is that I block all cookies from all sites and then go in and manually allow access for the sites that I need. So that's 121 entires I had to add back in, but it's worth it. This is THE MAIN reason I use Opera. If they every take this feature away I would have to look for an alternative, which is what FireFox did so I moved to Opera.
I also re-added the opera extensions I was using (mainly 'Classic Tabs') and my icon does not turn red when I download files.
Again, thank you for your help. Your comments and assistance pointed me in the right direction to solve my annoying problem.

So the problem came back again. This time I was not about to lose all my settings and start over again so with some additional testing I found the culprit to be "C:\Users%username%\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable\History" file. I renamed the "C:\Users%username%\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable" directory out of the way, ran Opera and let it create a whole new "Opera Stable" directory and started coping files in one at a time to see which one caused the problem. So now I have a batch job I can run when the history file gets corrupted so I can replace it with a fresh one. I hope this helps others who might have similar issues.
