why does the "Block ads" block countryflags?

It could, if the flags are hosted on a tracker such as the Google ads server.

A 1x1 image can be a "web bug", so can a country flag. We'd have to look at the website to know.

Unfortunately the flag doesn't show up if not registered so the website link will not help.
The image is hosted on the same side, this is the html code:
