I tethered my phone's Internet to my HP laptop but if I switch on VPN, the pages won't load. Is this an impossible dream ?

@meee Is it impossible to use VPN on my laptop if the Internet access is via my phone ?
Could my location and access be detected as coming via this phone number / account ?
I would be grateful if someone could help me with this. Thanks.

The VPN connects? Any error message when you try to open a page?

@leocg Thanks for the reply. No error message at all - the processing circle goes round and round and round ! and if I meanwhile turn off the VPN, the page connects immediately. This happens with any link at all, even to answer your message, to connect to Google or clicking on the Learn More button of the VPN option on the security page of Opera itself.

But the VPN connects? Opera connects to the VPN server?

@leocg The orange VPN icon appears on the left of the address and the Opera page info icon. If I click it, it is connecting.......... it indicates 0 bytes transfered this month adn no location or IP is offered.

So the VPN is not connecting and, therefore, you can't connect to any site.

Something may be blocking the connection to the VPN server.

@leocg Thanks for the info. There were no computers in my school.
I guess that my Internet requests pass through a telephone service provider. O2 here in the UK and thence to an Opera server then on to the web page operator.
I guess that Opera either virtually or physically interposes a server in another place, between their server and the webpage operator and when a reply stream comes back for me, Opera remembers my address and sends it back to my tel. operator.
So perhaps my tel. operator knows nothing about me using VPN. . . ? and if so, the block I am experiencing is not of their design.

                    Should I be looking in my laptop: HP Compaq 6715s . . . . ?
In the settings - Network and Internet - Allow VPN over metered connections ?
Add a VPN connection - gives an option of Windows (built-in) - then asks: Connection name : Server name or address : Type of VPN : and sign in info

So has Windows provided me with a VPN function ?

With an Internet search I found:
Download OpenVPN for free, and I just read about it on Wiki . . . seems that lots of levels of security are possible.
Is that an option for me or is it run between collaborators ? i.e. does it need target webpage compliance ?

Can old dogs learn new trix ? Anyone willing to help me ? 🙂

@meee I can ask O2 ( in their office hours ) if they are blocking the VPN since Wiki says some operators do to sell you their service.

Should I "Report in Opera wizard"

Are you doing tethering through USB or through Wi-Fi?

Here I could connect the VPN while using my phone's connection in USB.
