Error "Can't open user profile directory..."

Hi.
Just this week, I have been using Opera 54.0 (Windows 7) and I am getting this message a few times. When Opera is forced to shut down, this error message pops up when I restart Opera. Then, it does not work. Then, I have to do a complete Windows restart to get Opera working properly. Is there some sort of easy(er) fix to this, or do I just have to accept it and restart Windows? Is there any chance that Opera 53.0 or some previous version would be better for me?

Yes, Opera has stopped responding, and I use task manager to close it. Even then, it doesn't want to close very easily. I hope I don't have to fix this whole thing by restarting my computer a bunch of times per week. Opera is doing a great job otherwise.

Your Opera profile and or the Opera program files might be corrupted causing the freeze which then corrupts the profile.
Here's what I'd do:
Delete "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software" (At least the "Opera Stable" on in it)
(Deleting that will cause you to loose all your settings, bookmarks and passwords etc., but it could fix things. You could use Opera Sync to sync a few things before and then sync after to get them back.)
Delete "C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Opera Software" (Or, at least the "Opera Stable" one in it)
Delete "C:\Program Files\Opera" (manually or via uninstall in Programs and Features)
Your Opera profile and or program files could be getting corrupted because your hard drive is failing.
Check your hard drive with CrystalDiskInfo.
Right-click on the shortcut to the command prompt and choose to run it as administrator.
Type
chkdsk /rand press ENTER. Press "y" and press enter to tell it to do a scan on restart. Then, restart your computer. The scan will take a long time (hours possibly).If your hard drive is alright with CrystalDiskInfo and the chkdsk scan turned out alright (or was able to fix any errors), download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", set "install path" to "C:\Program Files\Opera", set "install for" to "All users", check/uncheck any other options you want, and install.
That should fix everything.
If Opera still freezes, maybe you have a driver issue. You can go to "Menu -> settings -> Browser -> System" (while "show advanced settings" is checked) and uncheck hardware acceleration and restart Opera.
Or, maybe you have an anti-virus program like Avast and it's interfering with Opera.
Or, maybe you're running Opera with Sandboxie and it's interfering with permissions.
If you don't want ot delete your Opera profile and loose all your settings, download the Opera installer, launch it, click "options", set "install path" to a folder on your desktop, set "install for" to "standalone installation" and install. Test with that Opera to see if you have the same problem..
Things you could do to your existing profile instead of deleting it would be to go to
opera://flagsand restart Opera. And, goto "Menu -> settings -> Browser -> Reset Opera". -

Where are the Opera speed dial settings stored? I could not find this on the list of things that I could back up.

I am not sure why Opera has crashed on me a few times in the past 2 weeks. It could be due to internet connection problems. The program should not be bothered if the internet connection suddenly drops, but it may cause enough problems to crash it.
Regardless of cause, I think I may have found a possible way to avoid the "error, can't open user profile directory..."
When Opera has crashed/ not responding, try to close it with Windows Task Manager. Try to close the program under applications, and then try to close all processes that say "Opera" under processes. I think if all these processes are ended, the weird problem will not happen when you try to open Opera again. -

Opera has crashed way too many times. Sometimes Windows freezes up. I don't understand what the software problem is. I have uninstalled Opera and I may re-install it, to see if this gets rid of the problem. Otherwise, I will use Firefox.
Note: Firefox seems to use up a lot of memory on my laptop, so much that it slows way down at times. Opera manages the memory way better, and allows me to open more web pages at the same time. And I have a pretty good laptop with 4GB of RAM.
