for me is the fact that opera opens far faster

It doesn't open "far faster" when the VPN is slow; it takes time to validate the VPN tunnel.

yes it does. from the time i click on the opera i can till the interface is open is at least 10 times faster than firefox or chrome. but you knew what i was referring to.

                https://twitter.com/OperaVPN

One can subscribe to Opera Gold.

Opera Gold refers to a paid upgrade version of an iOS/iPad app in Apple's App Store, offered by OSL Network Services Limited, which operates over Opera's former SurfEasy's VPN service:

This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad
                Seller: OSL Network Services Limited

From the business listing of OSL Network Services:

Osl Network Services Limited was set up on Monday the 22nd of February 2016. Their current address is Dublin 2, and the company status is Normal. The company's current directors Petter Lade and Roar Olbergsveen have been the director of 6 other Irish companies between them.

                Registered Address:
                Fitzwilliam Business Centre,
                77 Sir John Rogerson's Quay,
                Dublin 2, Ireland

It's unclear (to me) just how the paid app may have been affected, if at all, by Opera's sale of SurfEasy in September 2017.

Google will auto-respond with a search portal version for the region associated with the IP of the server sending the search request to Google. If that server's IP is registered as Ukraine, then Google will respond with a Ukraine-locale search portal. It appears that one of the Opera VPN servers is registered as Ukraine and that is thus the locale sending the search request to Google. Some of the same things happened in Olde Opera days when using Opera's Turbo server.

How can the VPN be sooo much slower, it's like back on 56k.

Some of the 'VPN' addons however do work - and speed is similar to the old Opera VPN.

Maybe use that in the mean time? Or the Tor Button Addon...

Maybe it's related to the current and "problematic" change.

                          @moonz

You can try toggling that option to "reset it".

                            ...

A lot depends on the VPN server in use, its software, and its data pipelines. Because a VPN has multiple users who are continually running traffic both ways, and because perhaps much of that traffic is video, the traffic load can be terrific if the VPN service is popular. If the server, its control software, and its pipelines aren't sufficient or fully optimized for the traffic burden, slowdowns are the typical result. If there aren't enough physical servers and data trunks to handle the load, things will bog down. Data over a given connection is broken down into discrete packets, and during overload, individual or multiple packets will be delayed - sometimes for long periods. Until the necessary packets arrive and can be properly reassembled, things simply pause or stop for brief periods. Since multiple packets are involved, the overall effect appears as "slowdown" in the apparent data rate, or even service unavailability.

The questions are: is @moonx even using that setting; is the setting working if they are; and, as you noted, is there some other problem somehow related to the ongoing VPN issues.

                                About VPN slowliness,

                                • SurfEasy had pertain to Opera - if I'm not wrong -.
                                • Some months ago, they told that had to add more servers because so many users started using Opera and its VPN. - They knew about the network load -.
                                • Before the SurfEasy sale, they knew that some changes should be done in case the sale went ahead.
                                • They knew about their Data Center infrastructure and capabilities to allocate a new big amount of process, bandwidth, needings...

                                So,
If at this time, their DC is not enough because had no time to prepare it, ok, but tell it to the users, your users.

Actually, this situation is worst than explain that they will need some time to organize and reach the stability and speed they offered a month ago before the business transaction.

Since I remember, it's the second bad management of an Opera desktop big problem.

Well it's perhaps better that VPN isn't on Symantec servers,, just saying.

@zalex108 When Opera was acquired by the Chineses, it had to be split in two companies: Opera Software AS, the one that currently make the browsers named Opera and Opera ASA, that kept everything else like Surfeasy, Media Works, etc. As part of the deal with the Chineses, Opera ASA is changing its name to Otello Corporation.

We don't know how much time the developers had to set up the new VPN infrastructure after they knew that Surfeasy servers couldn't be used anymore.
Also, it's the holidays break and many people should be away, so any problems may take a way longer to be fixed.

If they work together they should cooperate with each other.

Opera Software AS, the one that currently make the browsers named Opera and Opera ASA, that kept everything else like Surfeasy, Media Works, etc. As part of the deal with the Chineses, Opera ASA is changing its name to Otello Corporation.

Past yesterday I've read about the changing name.

We don't know how much time the developers had to set up the new VPN infrastructure after they knew that Surfeasy servers couldn't be used anymore.

I'm not "complaining" about the problem, I'm referring to the "disappointment" of the silence.

@zalex108 If you ever worked in a company, you know that employees are usually the last ones to know about employers (owners) decisions. So I guess it should have been something more of 'Ok, we just sold Surfeasy, you need to start using another VPN service until the end of the year' than a 'Hey, we are thinking of selling Surfeasy so it seems good that you start looking for a VPN service to use in Opera'.

About the silence, probably there is no one to say something for the same reason there is no one to fix the issue.

Also, it was never Opera's policy to do statements about any issues.

There was a copyright fees dispute among Youtube (Google) and local interests group in here some time ago and people were furious as for few days all content in Youtube wasn't available - and Opera spread like wildfire due to Facebook comments praising Opera's VPN - but now it's silly'n'slow - it can't be used at all.

Getting the VPN right should be the main focus on first day. Rent pipelines and clouds. The shift is just too sudden and too much to ask, really.
