Did you check with a clean profile folder?

      Hi leocg!

Okay, so I did the following:

      1. Go to the folder "C:\Users\appa\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software".
      2. Renamed the folder "Opera Stable" to "Opera Stable.old".
      3. Shut down the computer.
      4. Turned the computer back ON.
      5. Open the folder "C:\Users\appa\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software".
      6. Opened Opera.

      The results are as follows:

      1. Opera creates a new "Opera Stable" folder inside "C:\Users\appa\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software".
      2. The problem of Opera hogging down the bandwidth is completely gone!

So, based on these findings, I am not sure whether auto-updater is what's consuming the bandwidth.

Also, I want to know how I can transfer extensions from my old profile to this new profile, along with their respective settings?

It's not something easy I guess.

Try installing the extensions and then copy the 'Extensions Rules', 'Extensions State' and 'Local Extensions Settings' folders.

            Ummm....didn't work.. 馃槂
            Any other method?

Also, I don't know why but even after adding the synchronisation account, not all settings are being synced to this new profile. These include:

            1. The speed dials...they're all gone...being shown under "Other Speed Dials" in the Bookmarks Manager.
            2. Native Adblocker is still disabled.
            3. I had changed some of the keyboard shortcuts. They're back to the default keyboard shortcuts.
            4. Telegram, Facebook Messenger etc aren't being shown in the Sidebar any longer.
            5. and a few more.

Oh well..I just changed the settings myself.

            Thanks @leocg!

You may need to copy the Preferences file too. In fact it would be better to start from the ground since copying from a broken profile may bring the issues back.

The speed dials...they're all gone...being shown under "Other Speed Dials" in the Bookmarks Manager.

              This is how it works

              Native Adblocker is still disabled.

You need to enable it manually. Not sure if that setting is synced.

I had changed some of the keyboard shortcuts. They're back to the default keyboard shortcuts.

Customizations are not synced as far as I know

Telegram, Facebook Messenger etc aren't being shown in the Sidebar any longer.

              Even being enabled?

                Hi leocg!

No....what I meant was that I had them enabled earlier...before I upgraded to 45.0.2552.812. But after the upgrade, they're all disabled...I had to enable them manually to show up in the sidebar.

Also, you mentioned that some of the settings & customization aren't synced. But my opera has upgraded since then to 45.0.2552.888 (PGO) and I didn't face any of those issues this time (be it manually enabling the adblocker or having to change the keyboard shortcuts or having to manually enable the sidebar items). Were they part of the bug-fixes this time around?

And how it's related to sync?

When upgrading you should not lost anything.

                    Ahh! My bad!

Anyhow. With this recent upgrade, I've run into the same trouble of Opera hogging down the bandwidth. However, this recent avatar of the issue is strange and peculiar because it doesn't happen when I open a 'regular' Opera window; however, it always appears when I open an InPrivate window of Opera (now, there's no need to reboot your computer...it happens every time I open an InPrivate window)!

So, I tried the same thing I did earlier...renaming the existing Opera profile folder to "Opera Stable.old" and then opening Opera. And again, it seems that this solution works...Opera no longer hogs down the bandwidth.

However, I'm faced with the immense task of having to reconfigure Opera all over again...settings, extensions, bookmarks.. Can't we find a permanent automated solution to this? Please @leocg?

I don't work for Opera neither I am a developer, so there is nothing I can do.

                      But what about using Sync?

I am using Sync. That's why I was concerned when Syc didn't restore many of the changes I had made in Opera's default settings.

                            Hi zalex108!

I'm only moderately familiar with these jargons...could you please elaborate by what you meant by a 'profile backup'?

Are you suggesting that I take a backup of the profile folder before upgrading Opera? If yes, then I have this questions: When, after update, the newer version of Opera uses the same profile as the earlier version, can't we say that it's equivalent to using a backup profile with the new version?

Yes, actually at any time, weekly, every 2/3 weeks... it will save you from data lose if any problem happens.

As said by Opera, even before the updates, but you have to take care to do not restart before to do the back up.
Actually I had no problems with updates and profiles.

Well, it's just a copy, so is the same, but if something goes wrong you can restore all your data.

Just copy the profile folder and add the date before or after, if you have enough disk space you could have 2 profile bckps (full folder) plus the current one.

You could save just the needed files or the whole folder, (for USB installs delete cache folders).

Back up programs could do it for you.

So essentially, we're back to where we started...I'll have to re-do everything and before next upgrade, take a backup, and see if that backup serves me right when the upgraded Opera gives me troubles again...is my understanding correct?

                                  Yes.
But do periodical backups so (if it's needed) you would like to recover the most actual data.
