[Abandoned] Opera updates suck and I want to completely stop them

In my opinion Opera simply suck after version 40, I cannot select a picture of the website as my thumbnails and the news feed is not shown anymore on the front page.
I already managed to stop Opera from auto updating by deleting the auto update file on the installation directory but the browser still checks for new versions and the Menu button turns red with a dialogue baloon after a while.
Can someone tell me how to prevent this from happening? I simply love Opera 40 version and I dont want to change to another browser that easily.

It's a known problem. It is already fixed in the next release.

What do you use as the front/starting page anyway? Speed Dial by any chance? Because that can be heavily customized, see the cog icon ("Customize start page") in the upper right corner. Could that be of any help?
My start page shows the speed dial, but I have a link to 'my personal news' on the left side of the screen (you can customize this using the 'Navigation' tab in the custom settings which I mentioned above.

I see, well thanks anyway guys, sad to hear that I can't disable the auto check tho, I wish I could simply use the older browser since I believe it is better, but meh.

i find it hard to believe i just wasted 10 minutes trying to find setting for 'auto-updates off' and users are having to resort to renaming executables. users don't know why the internet app we are using is stuttering.. then find that in the background opera has been using up resources. other than this opera is a great browser
