Hello. I have a strange problem: in windows 10 start menu opera icon apears as white square, but in other places (desktop, bottom apps menu, all apps menu in start) the icon is right. In icon properties icon is set to launcher.exe.

Opera browser is good enough to not to reject it because of such problems. Maybe someone knows how to fix it.

Please have a look at this thread as the issue in question seems similar.

I see no answer in this thread, though it really seems similar, should I post my question there?

I had the same white, empty Startmenu square icon for Opera on my Win10 32-bit machine.

When installing Opera I had not directly accepted the the default options, but used the 'options' button in the installer window instead. For some reason now Opera was not installed in the standard C:\Program Files\Opera directory, but somewhere else (C:\Users......., you can check the install directory in Opera in Menu>about Opera)).

The following has resolved the problem for me:

            • unpin the empty icon from the startmenu,
            • uninstall Opera (but keep the browser settings)
            • reinstall, now manually indicating to install in C:\Program Files\Opera (you may have to create this directory using admin rights)
            • add (pin) the correct Opera icon to the startmenu

Please let me know if this works for you too.

Opera should install it self by default in C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera if you are installing a stable version.

You should notice that there are the installation folder/directory and the profile one. This one is under %appdata% (C:\users\username\appdata\roaming).

This sounds logical to me. I am not a computer illiterate and have installed Opera on a number of machines including Windows (7, 10) and Linux. I ran into the problem of the defective icon in the Start menu on one of my Windows 10 machines and noticed that on this machine Opera had been installed in the profile directory and NOT in the default Program Files/Opera directory. During installing Opera I remember not choosing the default options in the installer window, but opted for the 'options' (or the button called something like that). As far as I recall I did not indicate a different installation directory, but Opera was not installed in C:\Program Files\Opera, but in the ´profile directory' instead. Maybe I agreed to that option that was offered by the installer, but I did not intentionally choose a installation directory different from the default one.

Regardless, in my experience the issue of the missing Opera icon in the Start menu occurs when Opera has been installed in a directory other than the default C:\Program Files\Opera (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera on 64-bit systems), and can be resolved by (re)installing in the default directory.

Was the installation done with an account with admin rights?

Yes, the account had admin rights.

Note: On the other machines that I installed Opera on, I used accounts with admin rights too, but in the installer I used the default settings (no further tweaking options were offered), which resulted in an installation in the default directory, and also no problems with the Startmenu icon.
