The most obvious case where you should have a VPN is if you are using an open WiFi network. If you're in a store or restaurant or hotel that provides free wifi and they don't give you a password, then anyone in the area can snoop on you.

If you're trying to get around a snooping partner you need a private window (not kept in history) rather than a VPN. If you're worried about government-level censorship they can probably block VPNs anyway. And trying to get around geoblocking ... possibly, but you may be violating laws as well as the site's TOS in doing so and therefore I can't endorse it.

@blackbird71 Because of my continuing concerns regarding the Chinese ownership of Opera, I've permanently switched over to the New Edge. This may be my last post here … we'll see but at this point I no longer see a reason to continue (and that will end a relationship going back to 2001 or 2002 I forget which now). Best wishes to all my former Opera friends for continued success.

How long did you wait? If the script isn't locking up and is just busy the whole time, you might not be waiting long enough. You might have to wait over 24 hours for example. Not saying that's comforting, but you can try waiting way longer.

Before you try again though, in "Options -> Advanced -> General -> Config editor", add/set dom.max_chrome_script_run_time to 0 so Thunderbird never complains about the script being busy. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Dom.max_script_run_time.

@jeezara But EM Client is so restrictive. I think it only allows 1 account! If you only have 1 account you might as well use webmail. What about older Outlook? What are the downsides to that? Like from 2003. I've got a copy. But I wonder about security when using older email programs. Of course Opera Mail has been dead for years.

Maybe its because Dubai has some strict cybersecurity rules and regs. I used Ivacy VPN during my 3 months stay in DXB and I had no disconnection issues with it.
