Update: I finally resolve this. There is a line in settings that Retain tabs from previous session has an option underneath:
Display the Start Page first
and this was toggled on. Once I turned that off, now only the linked page opens.
I will admit this ... I use openSuse Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma on 2 desktops and two laptops.
I use Chrome, Chrome Beta, Brave, Firefox, Opera ... they all have the "missing KDE titlebar". It's a trend. KDE can be partly to blame.
I also use openSuse MicroOS Kalpa in a VM (testing it out). It's an immutable rolling release operating system (with KDE Plasma) and all apps exist as flatpaks (can use rpms too). I did the same workaround for browsers in MicroOS.
Can confirm this solved the issue for me.
I figured out how to use snap library, as @mr-matt-eastwood suggested.
On Manjaro Linux 20, opera directory is /usr/lib/opera.
You don't have to delete original libffmpeg.so file, but just rename it to whatever (including extension).
Steps:
# If you cannot use sudo -i, then just prefix your commands with sudo
sudo -i
# Close your browser by hand. Following command will ensure no Opera processes are running in the background
killall opera
cd /usr/lib/opera
# Some software automatically loads any .so/.dll file that is present. Not sure for Opera, but just in case
mv libffmpeg.so libffmpeg.so_original
snap install chromium-ffmpeg
# Please note that chromium-ffmpeg-95241 path might differ. Just pickup one with highest number.
ln -sf /snap/chromium-ffmpeg/current/chromium-ffmpeg-95241/chromium-ffmpeg/libffmpeg.so libffmpeg.so
I use the default cinnamon desktop and I have tried launching from the terminal with the same result every time. Thank you all for looking into this.
This seems to be a common issue on Mint / Cinnamon d.m.
Just do a google search for
opera maximize cinnamon desktop
... and you'll see posts going back to 2019. Making changes to the startup icon isn't consistent - there are a couple other shortcuts to try. Some say put a shortcut on the desktop and change it.
Quite a few also change this in Opera:
" In Opera go Menu > Settings.
In the "On startup" section select
"Retain tabs from previous session" (optionally select "Display the start page first" option if you want that). "
@myswtest
Thank you for your suggestion I have looked at the post.
Unfortunately I do not run any of the major desktops.
My desktop is based on Fluxbox as my WM that is it.
I customized the theme (decorations+top bar + buttons, etc) and 'definitely' I want all my applications to follow my settings.
I.e my close window button is on the left not right. and I want to be able to 'shade' a window
Following is just a general frustration rant feel free to ignore it.
Since when the developers know better what I like?
Since when the liberty to choose the look and feel of your screen went up in smoke
I do not mind having more options to fit everybody choice and taste but removing the fundamentals of what free means is quite mean
Besides not everybody uses touch screens and smart devices and use their fingers on the touch screen.
