I just reinstalled (updated) Opera, but I still can't load images with brackets.
But with a dash and a number it works!
Then I can rename the picture again because Opera has saved the picture (with dash and number).

Ah yes, I see that.
If I have (e.g.) 'Filename (1)' or ...(2), (3) etc.,
then it doesn't work!!
I'll use a hyphen instead of the bracket:
instead of filename (1) filename-1 ...-2, -3 etc.
I hope it works then!

I tried your version 1 (workaround) and it works!!
However, it is a little easier:
click on the picture, then right click, open with PAINT and then save under TEST.
This means that I do not need version 2.

It's very strange:
All images are formatted in JPEG, various sizes!
And yet some (about 10%) are accepted as background, others are not (although the same size)!!
Maybe it's OPERA?

Can't you solve my problem that some pictures (about 10%) are suitable as a background and others (about 90%!) not??
However, all downloaded images are available as thumbnails!!
