Just found an interesting work-around!

(1) Click the menu button and go to "Appearance", then click "Buttons", then click "Search". Drag-and-drop Startpage onto the top toolbar AS ITS OWN SEARCHBAR.

(2) Remove the default searchbar from the toolbar altogether.

(3) Close Opera.

(4) Go to search.ini and simply delete the entire paragraph pertaining to Google:

(5) Restart Opera. Address bar will not work for searches. Now simply use the Startpage searchbar you created before!

Found a resolution that works for making ixquick the search engine for Opera without Google being set as the default after a restart.1. Type "opera:config" in the url window2. Type "google" in the quick find search3. Enter "https://ixquick.com/" in the field for "Google2011 Location Provider" under "Geolocation"4. Enter "ixquick.com" in the field for "Google TLD Default" under "User Prefs"5. Enter "https://ixquick.com/do/search?language=english&cat=web&query=" in the field for "Google TLD URL" under ""User Prefs"6. Click Save 7. Type "https://ixquick.com/" in the url window8. In the search window to the right of the url window, where Google appears, click on the downward arrow to reveal "Manage Search Engines" and select by clicking that selection9. Highlight Google and delete10. If ixquick is not shown, click "Add...' otherwise highlight ixquick and the Edit11. Make sure Ixquick is in the field for the name12 Make sure "ix" is the keyword13. Click the Details button14. Enter "http://ixquick.com/do/met.asearch.pl" in the field for "Address"'15. Enter ""https://ixquick.com/do/search?language=english&cat=web&query=" for the "Query string"16. Click the box before "Use POST" so a checkmark appears17. Reboot OperaIf the above instructions are followed and there are no spelling errors (I use copy and paste or control C and control V as much as possible since I still use the hunt and peck method at 56 years of age), when Opera reboots, Ixquick will be the default search engine and Google will NOT appear in the list of search engines for the browser.I am strong-headed and when I find something that works, and works well, I like to continue using it. Have been frustrated like many Opera users with some changes over the years but for many many reasons, it is still my browser of choice, especially since it can actually be customized unlike many browsers, and can perform many operation unavaible with other browsers.Although I am strong-headed, I am not reluctant to admit when I make a mistake. The mistake I made was not visiting the forum before allowing the update to Opera to occur. Had I done so, a lot of frustration could have been avoided. I appoligize to any volunteer and developer I may have upset.

I have tried this "solution" and IT DOES NOT WORK. I have now rebooted several times. It continues to revert to Google. I even tried editing the google search settings to tell it to go to Startpage.com. Nothing works. Someone has got to have a better work-around - maybe it's in an actual file? I am not afraid to go into a file on the disk and modify it if someone can tell me where to go and what to change.

Sincerely, someone who is tired of resetting her search engine preference every single time she opens a new Opera session.

Thanks for trying, I guess... I'm still hoping someone will contribute an answer to my actual question, but I'm starting to wonder if there's no one on the forums who can...

The toolbar idea sounds interesting - still up for anyone else with comments on making Google stop appearing, but if no one can figure that out then I guess I'll have to try that instead!

Ok I'm going to need some help from someone with a LOT more technical knowledge here.

There's some background file or setting that is not only making Google UN-deleted but also reset as the DEFAULT search engine - for the search bar and the address bar. That's just horrible and unacceptable. Google doesn't need any more of anyone's information than they already get. I don't know if Opera has some creepy contract with Google or what, but none of the other search engines are behaving this way with this browser.

I already understand the information provided to me (I have no idea why I was directed to simply add another search engine - I already explained in my first post that I did exactly that!) I use StartPage which is the only somewhat anonymous search engine on the web, and it's the only one I ever want my browser to use. I have set it to default every single time I've used Opera, and every time I start a new session, StartPage is still in the available searches but Google has reappeared as the default. It is absurd to have to manually delete Google as soon as I open up Opera every single time. Opera needs to respect my setting and stop overriding it, and I'm hoping that someone here knows how to make it do that.

I don't like Google and I don't want them as a search engine in Opera. Each time I open Opera, even though I have deleted Google from the search engines in the preferences in my last session, Google reappears as the default search engine. I deleted other search engines (like the Wikipedia search) and they never reappear - only Google. I always set an alternative for the default, but with each new session it brings back Google and makes it default again. How can I permanently take Google out of the search engine options and make sure my alternative search engine will always be the default selection?
